National Basketball Association Commissioner Adam Silver spoke in front of a sold-out crowd at Old Cabell Hall Friday morning for the Centennial Speaker Series Conversation. As part of the McIntire School of Commerce’s 2019 Fall Forum, the conversation was centered around the topic of sports business and moderated by Commerce School Dean Carl Zeithaml. The event began with Zeithaml’s conversation with Silver, followed by two panels — “The Evolution of Sports: Insights from the Inside” and “Game Changers: How Athletes, Startups and Industry Giants Disrupt the World of Sports.”

After three weeks of preparation, the Virginia men’s and women’s cross country teams return to action for their fourth meet of the season. The men kick things off Friday afternoon at the Nuttycombe Wisconsin Invitational in Madison, Wis., while the women follow Saturday morning at the Under-Armour Pre-National Invitational in Terre Haute, Ind.

At the midway point of Virginia football’s season, it is an opportune time to assess Virginia’s current position in the divisional race. With two consecutive losses and an overall record of 4-2, the Cavaliers no longer remain at the top of the Coastal division. With five out of the seven teams trading positions week after week and a spot in the ACC Championship on the line, no one in the division is safe.

The Walter Camp Football Foundation presented the National Defensive Player of the Week award to junior Virginia linebacker, Charles Snowden, Sunday. Snowden’s 15 tackles, 3.5 tackles for loss and 2 sacks set the tone for the Cavaliers’ strong second-half defensive performance Saturday night against Old Dominion at Scott Stadium. The Virginia defense posted 11 tackles for loss and 6 sacks, holding the Monarchs to only 46 total yards of offense in the second half.

In the third home game of the season, the Virginia men’s soccer team defeated Radford (1-3-2, 0-0 Big South), 1-0. The Cavaliers (5-0, 1-0 ACC) scored in the fifth minute of the match and secured the victory with a shutout by junior goalkeeper Colin Shutler.

In its second meet of the season and home opener, the Virginia cross country team came up with a strong performance in the inaugural Cavalier Classic at Panorama Farms. The men’s team especially stood out, claiming both the team and individual titles.

Virginia Director of Athletics Carla Williams announced last week the hiring of Vin Lananna, one of the biggest names in the track and field community. Lananna comes to Virginia from Oregon where he was the associate athletic director.

About an hour away at Liberty University in Lynchburg, the Virginia men’s and women’s cross-country teams made their season debut Friday at Liberty Cross Country Course. Both teams competed against Liberty, Lynchburg and VMI in a 4K race.

Virginia men’s and women’s cross country begins another season with high anticipation. Both teams are returning after a disappointing postseason last fall — both men’s and women’s teams failed to place in the top two at the ACC Championships and NCAA Southeast Regional. That said, individually, one member from each team qualified to run at the national meet in Madison, Wis. — graduate student Brent Demarest and then-freshman Abbey Green. With the 2019 cross country season fast approaching, it’s time to preview both squads.

The Virginia track and field team competed at the 2019 Division I Outdoor NCAA Championships in Austin, Texas, from June 5-8. With nine Cavaliers competing — six men and three women — the Virginia men placed 18th, marking their fourth top-20 finish in five years, while the women finished 30th overall and clinched their best team finish since 2011.

Twenty-nine Virginia men’s and women’s track and field athletes traveled south to Hodges Stadium in Jacksonville, Fla., to compete at the NCAA East Preliminary Round beginning May 23.

The Virginia men’s and women’s track and field teams hosted the ACC Championships at Lannigan Field this past weekend. Entering the competition, the Virginia men ranked first in the ACC, while the Virginia women ranked third behind Florida State and Miami. Over the course of three days, the men — led by ACC Field MVP junior Jordan Scott — captured six ACC titles and 16 All-ACC honors to become the conference runner-ups with 117 points. The women concluded the competition in third place with three ACC titles and 12 All-ACC honors.

Senior thrower Hilmar Jonsson has competed at an elite level since he first came to Virginia. Jonsson was ACC Champion in the hammer throw in his first outdoor season with Virginia — spring 2016 — and continued his streak of ACC championship wins in 2017 and 2018. His dominance has extended into the 2019 outdoor season during his senior year. Jonsson recently beat his own school record, in addition to setting Lannigan Field and Icelandic national records with a mark of 75.26 meters at the Virginia Grand Prix. Outside of collegiate competition, Jonsson became the Iceland National Champion in the hammer throw in the summer of 2016.

The Virginia men’s and women’s track and field teams hosted their final meet to conclude the regular season Friday and Saturday at Lannigan Field. The 36-team field at the Virginia Grand Prix gave the Cavaliers an opportunity to put some finishing touches on the season before the ACC Championships.

The Virginia men’s and women’s track and field teams hosted a quad meet against Maryland, Pittsburgh and West Virginia over the weekend. In the season opener for the majority of Virginia athletes, the Cavaliers set the tone early in the field events and carried over the success to the track. The best performance of the meet goes to senior Jade Baker for her school record performance in the hammer throw.
