After arriving at the University in the fall of 2020, I watched The Cavalier Daily from afar, liking Instagram posts, reading news articles and lurking on X, formerly known as Twitter. I had been interested in journalism throughout highschool, but I never had the courage to get involved because of an irrational fear of failure. That all changed when spring rolled around, and I found myself increasingly enamored by the fast paced world of news reporting. Unable to resist my curiosity about journalism anymore, I gathered the courage to attend both info sessions.

Four years ago on move in day, I arrived at the University with a million questions racing through my mind. As my parents finished helping me unpack and left, I sat back and pondered, a mix of excitement and nerves. Could I actually live on my own? Yes! I’ve always advocated for honesty and transparency, so it’s only fair that I stick to these values for the sake of the students at this University and the readers of The Cavalier Daily. I, Cecy Juárez, am one of the three “squirrels of U.Va.” running the @thesquirrelsofuva page.

I’m going to be honest here — I don’t know where to start. Every writing professor I’ve ever had, every editor I’ve ever worked with, has told me not to start essays this way.

Students, faculty and Charlottesville community members gathered by the University Chapel Tuesday afternoon, forming an encampment to protest Israel’s actions in the ongoing Israel-Hamas war. The encampment — referred to as “Liberated Zone 4 Gaza” — comprised more than 100 people as of Wednesday afternoon, although the number of protestors fluctuated greatly as the day progressed. Several faculty were in attendance, with some holding a large sign reading “[Faculty for Justice in Palestine] at U.Va. stands with students.” Faculty also served as liaisons with University Police and Student Affairs, who have said they will let the protests continue as long as they comply with University policy.

When “Down Under” by Men at Work plays at Disharoon Park, Virginia fans know that a big play is certain to happen. The walkup song of graduate catcher Jacob Ference signals a massive at-bat for Virginia and consequently imposes a sense of fear on opposing pitchers. Defying preseason expectations, Ference plays a pivotal role in an electric Cavalier offense — and a generally successful 2024 campaign.
