After an impressive series win against Duke last weekend that secured Virginia’s spot in the ACC Championship — followed by a crushing loss Tuesday versus Virginia Tech — the Cavaliers (32-17, 15-9 ACC) faced off against Georgia Tech in Atlanta, Ga. for their final conference series of the year. While the Yellow Jackets (31-22, 12-12 ACC) bested Virginia in the first game, the Cavaliers came back strong to win the two following matches and the series.

After my big in my sorority and I spread the word about our dining experience at Oakhart Social last month, the rest of our “family” — including my cousin, grandbig and great-grandbig — wanted seats at the table, too. As we all sent suggestions in our group chat for somewhere that we could affordably dine, my great-grandbig suggested Thai Cuisine and Noodle House, citing the drunken noodles as the best she has ever had. The price point was almost as appealing as the food itself, with most options under $17 and the most expensive item we ordered costing just $13.50.

Virginia’s Friday semifinal matchup in the ACC Tournament was one to forget for the No. 6 Cavaliers (14-4, 6-3 ACC), who were thoroughly beaten by Syracuse (14-5, 8-1 ACC) by a 19-4 margin. Virginia was second-best in almost all facets of play, and an early lead taken by the No. 4 Orange was too much for the Cavaliers to come back from.

After weeks of anticipation and emotional buildup for the rematch of the 2023 Final Four game, Virginia faced off against Notre Dame in a clash of collegiate lacrosse titans. However, any hopes of victory held by Virginia players and fans were crushed in the last quarter of play. Saturday’s matchup saw No. 6 Virginia, the national leader in ground balls, somehow allowed No. 1 Notre Dame, a distant 15th, to win the ground ball battle by a whopping 24. This ground ball dominance propelled the Fighting Irish (10-1, 4-0 ACC) to an 11-9 triumph over the Cavaliers (10-4, 1-3 ACC) at Klöckner Stadium before a crowd of 6,479, the stadium’s highest attendance mark in 11 years.

As Name, Image and Likeness and recruiting restrictions continue to change amidst calls to properly compensate collegiate athletes, especially those in high-earning sports, a new law signed April 18 allows Virginia schools to compensate players for NIL rights. The University played a major role in drafting the bill, which takes effect July 1. House Bill 1505 is indeed groundbreaking and will largely shift the NIL landscape in Virginia, but Athletic Director Carla Williams should be cautious with this sudden and unprecedented change.

The University is the proud home of countless distinguished individuals and loves to talk about its successful alumni and force — I mean, invite — them to speak to current students. Many of the celebrities we know and love today were once lowly students roaming around Grounds. From these humble beginnings, many alumni have gone on to utilize the education they received at the University to make a tangible difference in the real world. They may have become famous through mugshots, but all press is good press, right? By learning their stories of success, we younglings can feel inspired to reach toward great heights.

For the third year in a row, the Cavaliers have an NFL Draft selection. Graduate receiver Malik Washington — a first team All-ACC selection scooped up in the sixth round by Miami — will proudly represent Virginia in the professionals. Looking at Cavalier connections, Washington is the 189th former Cavalier in NFL history. He is also the first Virginia player selected by the Dolphins since Terry Kirby back in 1993.

There are certain college athletes that, upon graduating or departing from their school, require a level of appreciation so large that the school’s fans will feel guilty no matter how many plaudits they provide. As Reece Beekman readies himself for graduation from the University and an entrance into professional basketball, Virginia men’s basketball fans are in that situation. While Beekman may never get the thank you he deserves, it is worth trying to encapsulate all that the program has to be thankful for during his time with the Cavaliers.

When asked to describe a typical “gym bro,” students say they’re familiar with the type — a grunting, muscle tee-ed fitness guru with no shortage of creatine. But few say they actually see such characters on Grounds. Their descriptions of the University gym scene include friends, classmates, TAs and even professors simply focusing on one thing — their everyday health. Their prioritization of well-being, not just muscle gain or weight loss, raises the bar when it comes to gym culture on Grounds.
