A circuit judge in Virginia authorized a Memorandum of Understanding June 20 that will allow Sweet Briar College to remain open for the 2015-16 academic year. Saving Sweet Briar Inc., the plaintiffs of the case, partially fulfilled the first provision of the memorandum Tuesday by paying $5 million in donations to the college for continued operation.

Governor McAuliffe announced Nelson Moe as the new Chief Information Officer for the Commonwealth of Virginia Tuesday. As the new CIO, Moe will head the Virginia Information Technologies Agency beginning June 8.

The Office for Civil Rights within the U.S. Department of Education released a new guidance packet clarifying the responsibilities and powers of Title IX coordinators across universities. The package included a “Dear Colleague Letter” — a letter to Title IX coordinators — and a Title IX resource guide, aiming to restructure Title IX offices to make coordinators more visible and reporting more direct across college campuses.

The number of arrests at the 37th annual Foxfield Races on Saturday decreased substantially from last year. The Albemarle Police Department arrested six people and the Albemarle County Sheriff’s Office arrested one, totalling seven arrests. There were 18 arrests in 2014, 33 in 2013 and 61 in 2012.

Third-year Engineering students Grace Wusk and Trisha Hajela hosted over 50 middle and high school girls at an event entitled “Ladies in the Lab” Sunday. The event showcased female engineering students and encouraged middle and high school-aged women to pursue careers in science, technology, engineering and math.

The Columbia School of Journalism held a press conference Monday addressing its report released Sunday night analyzing Rolling Stone’s failed reporting and editing procedures for Sabrina Rubin Erdely’s “A Rape on Campus” article. Two of the report’s authors, Steve Coll, dean of the School of Journalism at Columbia University, and Sheila Coronel, dean of academic affairs at the Graduate School of Journalism at Columbia University, led the event.

The Women, Gender & Sexuality Department hosted a lecture titled “Perverse Ambitions, Deviant Careers: Toward a Queer History of the Modern American Workplace” by Assoc. Prof. Margot Canaday from Princeton University. Roughly 70 attendees listened to the talk on how the experience of gays and queer individuals in the workplace has developed over time.
