The University still faces a formal review by its accrediting agency, the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools, for the firing and subsequent rehiring of University President Teresa Sullivan this past summer. The association will make a decision in December about whether the University will face penalties, according to a letter recently released under the Virginia Freedom of Information Act.

Dr. Sergei Khrushchev, the son of former Soviet Premier Nikita Khrushchev and a senior fellow at Brown University, spoke on a panel Thursday evening about the Cuban Missile Crisis. This year marks the 50th anniversary of the crisis, which pitted Khrushchev’s father against President John F. Kennedy.

It took the Charlottesville Fire Department more than an hour to contain the fire that broke out at the unfinished George Welsh Indoor Practice Facility Monday afternoon. After years of work on the part of the University Innocence Project, Maligie Conteh boarded a bus as a free man for the first time in several years. A wrongful robbery conviction in 2010 had put him behind bars. Lawyers from the University Innocence Project managed to get his conviction overturned Sept. 13 — just days before Conteh was scheduled to be deported to Sierra Leone.
