Nestled among 16 million other objects in the Albert and Shirley Small Special Collections Library — including archival records, rare books and maps — are over 9,000 glass plate negatives taken by photographer Rufus W. Holsinger between the year 1912 and the start of World War I. Around 500 of these photographs are of Black Charlottesville residents — and for the first time, a group of individuals from across the University are blowing the dust off the slides and bringing them into the light.

The Honor Committee met for the first time this semester Sunday, spending the vast majority of the hour-long meeting discussing The Cavalier Daily’s recent three-part investigative series into the Committee’s donation to U.Va. Mutual Aid and e-mail correspondence with the chair of the University Board of Elections. The Committee also heard an update on preparations for Honor’s Popular Assembly from Caitlin Kreinheder, vice-chair for education and fourth-year Architecture student.

University Counsel Tim Heaphy was removed from his role by Attorney General Jason Miyares, per a statement issued by the University Saturday, ending a three-year tenure. Most recently, Heaphy had been on a leave of absence from the University working as the chief investigative counsel for the Select Committee on the Jan. 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol.

Todd Gilbert, class of 1993 College alumnus and Republican Delegate for the Virginia House of Delegates, was unanimously elected speaker of the House Jan. 12, the first day of the 2022 General Assembly session. Considered the most powerful member of the House, the speaker serves as the chief presiding officer and determines committee chairs and members.

The spring semester will begin as planned with no changes to move-in dates or the start of in-person instruction, per an email sent Friday by University President Jim Ryan, Provost Liz Magill, Chief Operating Officer J.J. Davis and K. Craig Kent, executive vice president for health affairs. However, all students and academic division faculty and staff must now upload proof of a booster shot by Jan. 14 — a change from the original Feb. 1 deadline.

The Health System Board heard prepared remarks from the School of Medicine, School of Nursing and medical system during its meeting Thursday. Members of the Academic and Student Life Committee discussed new professorships in entrepreneurship and engineering and a new directorship in the Center for Teaching Excellence. The meetings were a part of a two-day series of Board of Visitors meetings held Thursday and Friday.

Early Tuesday morning, Charlottesville City Council voted unanimously to donate the contentious statue of Confederate general Robert E. Lee to the Jefferson School African American Heritage Center. JSAAHC plans to melt the bronze statue into metal blocks and transform the metal into a new public work of art.
