Fall is finally upon us and with it has come a resurgence of seasonal admiration for pumpkin-flavored treats. There is no shortage of recipes for pumpkin spice cakes, coffees and creamers, but even with the market so flooded with gourdy deliciousness, there is but one ultimate recipe that can reign supreme.

While the world is shut down for the next few weeks as coronavirus quarantines take over the social sphere, travel abroad is impossible. But fear not — in the midst of taking care of the health and safety of yourself and your neighbors, there is still a way to treat yourself to a couple bites of delicious French cuisine.

I have been out to brunch and spent big bucks on a combination of avocado toast, scrambled eggs and cheese more times than I can count. However, seeing as I have less than $20 on hand at any given point in time, this has become an unsustainable habit for me.

When the weekend rolls around, University students like to sleep in and kick back. But when awoken at 11 a.m. by a growling stomach or a hungry friend, there is only one option — brunch.

Most people keep one or two frozen meals on hand for those busy days when a leftover potato and a wrinkled green bell pepper comprise the entirety of their fridge. But a persistent question frequently haunts my mind as a pre-made dinner consumer — are the optional oven or stove-top directions worth the extra time or will my meal taste just as good in the microwave?

In 1976, John Crafaik Jr. saw a gap in the Charlottesville food community. There was no one offering easy, deli-style food to University students, so “Little John” decided to open his Delicatessen, which has since become one of the most reliably delicious spots on the Corner.

When living at home, it can be easy to assume all the little things that keep a household running smoothly happen on their own. It is by some force of nature that the sponges are switched out before they get too stinky. It’s magic that starts the dishwasher on time. Drains that get clogged summon Drano from some special void, and those random necessities that everyone relies on, like neosporin and sugar, just appear in the cupboard of their own volition.

The Ivy Inn Restaurant has been around for decades. It’s a sort of Charlottesville staple — the kind of establishment that was around when our parents were young and will hopefully be around for our kids. It’s the perfect place for Family Weekend, an option which far outranks the University’s other offerings of frat parties or bars. It also provides students with a golden opportunity to scam their dear old moms and dads out of a nice, classy dinner.

My week back in Charlottesville was a busy one. It took several long days of unpacking and decorating, but eventually it occurred to me to go to the store and buy groceries. Of course, after an already long week, my brain was a little bit fried, so walking into the grocery store I had no idea what I needed to buy. After three effortful and very fruitless trips to Trader Joe’s, I was left with a box of cereal and a bag of grapes, and some bread and Nutella. This was not a sustainable diet — there was also nothing to make for dinner, and two days of peanut butter lunches and Nutella toast breakfasts really made me sick of bread and spread combos.
Stumped, I knew there was only one way for me to solve my grocery-confused conundrum. So, of course, I called my mom and begged her for tips on how to stock up my cabinets. She provided me with an all-inclusive, incredibly helpful list of pantry essentials for each meal that has been keeping me well fed and happy thus far — without leaving me dreading another meal made up solely of Nutella.
Before I move on to sharing that list with all my faithful readers, I want to drop a shout-out to the woman who made this article possible. Thanks for keepin’ it real, ma. Now, without further ado, here are some essentials every college student must have on hand. They are mother-curated, so you can be sure they are pretty dang helpful.

There is nothing like a good cup of coffee. Any time of day or night, sitting down with a steaming cup of caffeine is a good way to gear up or wind down. Thus, I have made it a personal goal to get to know the coffee spots around Grounds.

The weather down in Charlottesville is unpredictable. Oftentimes, half the week will be spent under piercing sunshine and half the week will be spent under a raincoat. So, when the weather flips out and decides to obstruct my path to the nearest spot where I can shamelessly purchase a cookie, I like to get creative.

Early on a rainy Saturday morning, all I wanted was a hot and satisfying breakfast. With fog coating the streets and sleep barely shaken from my mind, I was not prepared to face the day without some nutritious grub. So, I decided to take a trip to the Charlottesville farmers’ market to search out a nice meat pastry, and perhaps a carrot or two.

For most University students, pizza is a staple food. Rain or shine, spring or fall, pizza is a good way to end the day. And with the addition of MidiCi to the Shops at Stonefield, Domino’s stores all around Charlottesville are quaking in their boots.
