Top-ranked Virginia played in the ACC Tournament this past weekend. After a bye in the first round, the Cavaliers (16-2-2, 8-0-2 ACC) played fifth-seeded Clemson Friday night. Though Virginia only scored one goal, that was enough to defeat the Tigers (12-6-1, 6-3-1 ACC) thanks to the defensive performance by fifth-year goalkeeper Laurel Ivory and the Cavaliers’ solid back line.

No. 2 Virginia faced No. 5 North Carolina Sunday in a highly anticipated, top-10 match up. The Cavaliers (10-1-1, 3-0-1 ACC) had the higher ranking going into the match, while the Tar Heels (8-1-2, 1-1-2 ACC) had a home field advantage and a hefty 39-4-4 lead in the series between the rival teams. Ultimately, after two scoreless halves and two scoreless overtime periods, the match ended just the way it started — with a score of 0-0.

After a 7-1 start in non-conference play, Virginia began ACC play with multiple conference matchups. In the first, a showdown against Wake Forest Sept. 17, the Cavaliers (10-1, 3-0 ACC) made enough plays to hand the Demon Deacons (10-1, 2-1 ACC) their first loss. Virginia then returned to Charlottesville for a highly anticipated matchup against Duke Sept. 23, which it won 1-0 — humbling the Blue Devils (7-1-1, 1-1-1 ACC) who had just beat North Carolina for the first time since 2015. Finally, the Cavaliers took the road again on Sept. 26 for an away match at NC State, which they won 2-1 after scoring a 90th minute breaker against the Wolfpack (4-5-2, 0-3-0 ACC).

No. 3 Virginia is ranked highly in the United Soccer Coach ranking after an impressive run to the semifinals in the 2020 College Cup — which took place in the spring of 2021 — and four big wins to start the season. The first three were shutout wins — the first, an impressive 8-0 win over Richmond that featured five different goal scorers, the second being a 1-0 victory over West Virginia and the third, a 2-0 defeat of George Mason. Most recently, Virginia crushed George Washington 6-1 after getting on the board early. While it’s still early in the season, let’s break down Virginia’s schedule, roster and share some predictions for the squad.

Unranked Virginia women’s soccer upset No. 4 TCU in a tight, physical match Sunday at WakeMed Soccer Park to advance to the NCAA College Cup. This marked the Cavaliers' (14-4-2, 5-2-1 ACC) third consecutive shutout with the goal from senior defender Lizzy Sieracki and clean sheet by senior goalie Laurel Ivory to end the Big-12 champion Horned Frogs’ (12-2-2, 8-0-1 Big-12) season.

After a late 9 p.m. scheduled kickoff time and a thunder and lightning delay, Virginia women’s soccer defeated Rice University at WakeMed Soccer Park just after midnight to earn a spot in the NCAA Tournament quarterfinals. Sophomore Diana Ordonez was the leader of the Cavaliers (13-4-2, 5-2-1 ACC) offense to secure the 3-0 win over the Owls (14-3-1, 5-1-0 C-USA).

Virginia Athletics reported zero positive COVID-19 tests out of the 849 tests given between April 26 and May 2. This marks the first week since August when there have been zero positive tests, although the cases among the athletic department have been low as of late. Last week, there was only one positive case, while the week before tallied two.

Although Virginia women’s soccer entered the NCAA Tournament unranked, their performance thus far would make you assume otherwise. After a comfortable 3-1 win against SIUE-Edwardsville opening round, the Cavaliers (12-4-2, 5-2-1 ACC) put away another win over the Brigham Young Cougars (11-4-1, 7-1-1 WCC) thanks to a brace by junior forward Alexa Spaanstra and a shutout from senior goalkeeper Laurel Ivory.

Wednesday marked the 27th consecutive NCAA tournament appearance for No. 13 Virginia women’s soccer, as it faced Ohio Valley Conference champion Southern Illinois University-Edwardsville at WakeMed Soccer Park in Cary, N.C. The Cavaliers (11-4-2, 5-2-1 ACC) overcame an early 1-0 deficit to beat the Cougars (8-3-2, 8-2-2 OVC) 3-1.

Virginia Athletics reported a single positive COVID-19 result Monday over the 967 tests administered between April 5 and April 11. That marks a 0.1 percent positivity rate for the athletic department for the week. Since testing began in July, a total of 31,722 tests have been administered with 218 positives.

Sunday’s women’s soccer showdown between No. 10 Virginia and No. 4 West Virginia led up to its expectations and was a nail-biting, back-and-forth match all the way up to the 86th minute. The game remained scoreless until junior midfielder Isabella Sibly of the Mountaineers (10-2-0, 7-2-0 Big 12) slid one past the Cavaliers (10-4-1, 5-2-1 ACC) senior goalkeeper Laurel Ivory with just a few minutes left in the match.

No. 10 Virginia will face No. 4 West Virginia in what is set to be the most exciting pair of matches in the Cavaliers’ spring season. The Cavaliers (10-3-1, 5-2-1 ACC) will first face the Mountaineers (9-2-0, 7-2-0 Big 12) Saturday at 2 p.m. in Morgantown, W.V. before returning to Charlottesville, VA to face each other once more at 3 p.m. April 10.

After administering 1,152 COVID-19 tests to University student-athletes and athletic staff between March 22 and March 28, two resulted in a positive result. The weekly positivity rate was 0.17 percent, while the overall positivity rate since testing began in July remains at 0.7 percent.

After administering 1,481 COVID-19 tests between March 8 and March 14, the Virginia athletic department reported a single positive test among student athletes and staff. Over the course of the week, the University’s athletic department yielded a 0.07 percent positivity rate, while since testing began Jul. 5, the athletic department has had an overall 0.8 percent positivity rate.

After administering 1,297 COVID-19 tests between Feb. 22 and Feb. 28, the Virginia athletic department reported four positive results among student athletes and staff. These numbers reflect a 0.3 percent positivity rate and the lowest number of positive test results since the beginning of the spring semester. Athletic department COVID-19 testing began July 5, and 24,162 tests have been administered since, resulting in 203 positives, yielding a 0.8 percent positivity rate.

No. 10 Virginia opened its spring season with a rainy Sunday afternoon matchup against George Mason at Klockner Stadium. The Cavaliers (9-3-1, 5-2-1 ACC) maintained possession for the majority of the game but struggled to find the back of the net. However, in the 76th minute, freshman forward Lia Godfrey scored off of a free kick and junior forward Rebecca Jarrett scored shortly after in the 81st minute to lead Virginia to a 2-0 victory over George Mason (0-2, 0-0 A-10).

No. 10 women’s soccer is less than a week out from starting their six-game spring season that features an exhibition match against the North Carolina Courage of the NWSL. The Cavaliers (8-3-1, 5-2-1 ACC) played 12 games in the fall, including eight ACC matches before their season ended with a 2-0 loss to North Carolina in the ACC semifinal match.

The positivity rate for tests conducted last week was 1.8 percent, but the overall positivity rate — which includes all tests administered since July 5 — is 0.8 percent.

Since testing began on July 5, there have been 138 positive test results that have come from the 18,330 tests administered, tallying just shy of a 0.8 percent positivity rate.

After nearly a year since their last tournament, the Virginia women’s golf team earned their first win in a thrilling late match comeback this past weekend in the UCF Challenge in Orlando, Fla. The Cavaliers were led by senior Beth Lillie and sophomore Celeste Valinho, who aided the team in finishing with a three-round total of 859.
