“Close game” and “heartbreaker” have so often been synonymous terms where Virginia football is concerned. Tragic defeats in the games’ dying seconds have in so many ways come to define the Cavaliers (2-4, 1-1 ACC). However, luck finally broke for the much-maligned Virginia football team as a touchdown run by redshirt freshman Jordan Ellis in triple overtime capped off a 44-38 comeback victory by the Cavaliers.

Virginia football concluded its non-conference schedule with a 56-14 drubbing at the hands of Boise State Friday night. The Cavaliers’ out-of-conference slate proved tough as advertised, and losses to top-10 programs UCLA and Notre Dame as well as the preseason-ranked Broncos (3-1) leave a tough road to bowl eligibility for Virginia (1-3).

The stage appeared set for the upset. Virginia climbed back from a 26-14 deficit to gain a precarious grasp on a 27-26 lead with less than two minutes in the game. One minute and 42 seconds later, No. 9 Notre Dame dashed the Cavaliers’ hopes with a go-ahead touchdown with 12 seconds remaining in yet another moral-victory game for Virginia.

Former Virginia wing Justin Anderson was selected by the Dallas Mavericks in the 2015 NBA Draft Thursday night. As the draft’s 21st pick, Anderson becomes the first Virginia player to be taken in the first round since the San Antonio Spurs drafted Cory Alexander 29th overall in 1995.

One day before Virginia’s Super Regional against Maryland, coach Brian O’Connor did something he had never done before — he took a selfie. Two days later, O’Connor piled onto the mound of humanity which had formed over freshman Ernie Clement, whose two-run single punched the Cavaliers’ ticket to Omaha.
