Members of the Faculty Senate, an administrative body designed to represent faculty, have expressed concerns that the Senate does not adequately represent all of the University’s faculty members. Another concern amongst representatives to the Faculty Senate is a lack of awareness about the Senate’s purpose and procedures. Senators are considering ways to increase the visibility of the Senate within the University community at large.

The Faculty Senate discussed the results of the first University study of faculty and staff salaries since 2013 at their meeting Friday. The senate also discussed proposed changes to their bylaws and increasing reports of online aggression directed towards University faculty.

7 Day Junior has opened a new location on West Main Street, replacing the Carytown Tobacco store which previously occupied the lot. The owners of the West Main Street Carytown Tobacco sold the location to 7 Day Junior earlier this month and, after a brief move-in period, the store is now open for business.

The University released admissions decisions for the Frank Batten School of Leadership and Public Policy and the McIntire School of Commerce over the past week. Batten released its decisions Feb. 23 and offered admission to 69 percent of applicants, an 11 percent decrease compared to the previous year. The McIntire School of Commerce also released decisions for its B.S. in Commerce program Monday, however the exact data on the number of applicants admitted will not be available until transfer applications are processed later in the semester, according to Deputy University Spokesperson Bethanie Glover.

The University’s Community Food Pantry, which provides free food and hygiene items for students and faculty experiencing financial hardship, is hosting a Souper Bowl of Caring fundraiser to raise $50,000 for the pantry and help University students in need. If the goal is reached, the funds will cover the pantry’s operating costs for one semester. The campaign began Feb. 5 at 10 a.m. and will end Monday at 11 p.m.

The University’s Faculty Senate met Friday to hear speeches from candidates to be the Board of Visitors faculty representative. The Senate also heard remarks from University President Jim Ryan and Provost Ian Baucom, who spoke about contentious issues including free expression and the external review of the Nov. 13, 2022 shooting.

The Lawn Selection Committee received 177 applications to live on the Lawn for the 2024-2025 academic year. Applicants, who are required to have an expected graduation date of May 2025, can expect to hear back no later than Feb. 16.

The Board of Visitors’ Audit, Compliance and Risk Committee discussed the mid-year audit report and the Audit and Management report in a meeting Thursday. The Committee also received a financial summary from Chief Financial Officer Augie Maurelli.

Carbon emissions are down by 44.6 percent at the University, per the Committee on Sustainability’s 2022-23 annual report. According to the report, the group remains on track to achieve the goals of its long term sustainability plan, including becoming carbon neutral and fossil fuel free by 2030.

The Finance Committee of the Board of Visitors will meet virtually Friday at 11 a.m. for a workshop on proposed undergraduate tuition and fee increases, according to an announcement released Nov. 6. The Committee will also hear public comment at the workshop — individuals can register to provide comment by emailing boardofvisitors@virginia.edu until Thursday at 5 p.m.

University students got treated, not tricked, to Brown College’s Hauntings on the Hill this weekend, an annual Halloween fundraiser that had a “Frights, Camera, Action!” theme to celebrate American cinema. The $5,500 raised from the event will go to supporting The Haven, a day shelter and housing resource based in Charlottesville that helps individuals find affordable housing in Charlottesville.

The University Judiciary Committee met to conduct a training on sanctioning and complete its annual census during the general body meeting Sunday. The Committee also did some general housekeeping such as asking new members to sign up for the Committee’s mock trial week, which begins Nov. 6.

The Board of Visitors’ Buildings and Grounds Committee approved a new Scott Stadium video scoreboard and heard updates on the renovation of Alderman Library during their meeting Thursday. The Board also approved the naming of two new upper-class residence halls in honor of former professors, as well as the addition of new extensions at Fontaine Research Park.
