A punter threw a 56-yard touchdown pass, two back-up players accounted for 21 of Virginia's 48 points and the Cavaliers defeated an FBS opponent for the first time since beating Maryland Oct. 17, 2009.

It may have been true that one was picked to finish near the top of the ACC while the other was pegged to finish last, but there seemed to be an odd abundance of similarities between the Florida State and Virginia football teams as they headed into Saturday afternoon's matchup. Both teams entered the contest having lost only one game to a highly touted opponent in a hostile road environment. And against all of their other foes, they had both pulled off sound victories. Both teams featured new coaches prowling the sidelines, and they topped it all off with stingy defenses that ranked in the top 30 nationwide in points allowed.

As fall training camp drew to a close, Virginia's season-opening game against Richmond loomed on the horizon. Senior wide receiver Dontrelle Inman was fully aware that this season marked his final opportunity to make a difference as a Cavalier. He, like many of the other players in the Virginia locker room, had been handed a clean slate, void of the shadow of past disappointments or missed opportunities. Through Virginia's first two games this season, it seems Inman has embraced the chance to rewrite his history and fill the final chapter of his collegiate career with positive accomplishments on the field.

As the members of the Virginia offensive line walked up to the line of scrimmage for the first time Saturday against Southern California, they knew they were about to face one of the toughest challenges of their collegiate careers. Their task: Battle valiantly in the trenches against a USC defensive line that ranked 16th in the nation in sacks and held nine of its opponents to fewer than 100 yards rushing during the 2009 season.

During Saturday's commanding victory against Richmond, the Virginia sideline could barely contain its excitement as running back Keith Payne rumbled through countless Spider defenders. Payne's hard-nosed style of running not only yielded a career-high 114 yards for the senior but also glowing smiles and bear hugs from his fellow Cavaliers. It is difficult to imagine that a year ago, Payne turned his back on those same teammates and created a seemingly insurmountable rift between himself and the program.

Last season, the Virginia faithful became used to seeing their football team trudge into the tunnels of Scott Stadium at the end of a game, ready to forget each disheartening loss. Saturday night, however, they experienced a change of pace: at the close of the night, the fans saw their team charge toward the Virginia student section to celebrate a 34-13 victory against the Richmond Spiders, complete with high-fives and smiles.
