The No. 6 Virginia field hockey team lost in the semifinals of the ACC Tournament Friday to No. 7 Maryland, 5-1. The Cavaliers (15-5, 4-1 ACC) were stymied on offense throughout the game, firing off just six shots in the entire contest.

Virginia squad suffers OT defeat in big game

The No. 5 Virginia field hockey team fell to No. 2 North Carolina Saturday in a battle between the ACC’s top two teams. Virginia (13-3, 2-1 ACC) had not lost to a top-five opponent all year, and the Tar Heels (15-1, 4-0 ACC) needed all of regulation plus six minutes of overtime to achieve victory. North Carolina sophomore forward Loren Shealy scored the game’s first goal five minutes into the contest, but Virginia redshirt senior midfielder Michelle Vittese tied the game 15 minutes later after dribbling a penalty corner into the middle of the circle and launching a successful shot.

Duo overcomes odds for Olympic spot

Last Friday, Virginia field hockey players Michelle Vittese and Paige Selenski watched at the White House as President Barack Obama honored a group of athletes who, in his words, “could not have been better ambassadors and representatives for the United States.” The president was addressing the country’s 2012 Olympians, including Vittese and Selenski, in a fitting end to a story that began with the duo’s once-unlikely journey to London. Leaving Charlottesville Pursuing an Olympic dream requires sacrifices that extend more deeply than the physical strain of training.
