Tuna mercury levels questioned

Consumers generally include canned tuna in a balanced diet as an affordable, healthy alternative to beef, but many are unaware that tuna can also poison a balanced diet. Nutritional guidelines limit tuna intake for pregnant women, but without sufficient warning to the general public, tuna remains the third most popular grocery store item under sugar and coffee, according to U.S.

Specialty condoms: worth the cost?

In your local supermarket or drugstore, the male condom selection can be very overwhelming. Super thin, ribbed, non-lubricated, twisted tip -- does it really make a difference, or are they just gimmicks to make you spend more of your hard-earned cash? When asked about the difference, Allison Beaver, assistant director of health promotion at Student Health, said the center does not endorse any particular type. "Student Health does not recommend a certain brand of condom," she said.

If you can't loosen up, it's best not to go down

As a woman, I'm unaccustomed to sexual performance anxiety. Our problem has traditionally been the generation -- not the utilization -- of desire. Still, there are moments when, in the midst of our recommended daily landslide of feral passion, we get caught up in some mechanical dilemma. Example: After the rush of devotion that goes into good oral sex, should one crown the achievement with a kiss?

Caffeine claims many an addict

Caffeine may be an appealing option for late night study sessions or early morning pick-me-ups, but the negative health effects that a person can experience as a result of caffeine intake may outweigh the short-term benefits provided by the substance. Fourth-year College student Geoff Yenson, who works as a Starbucks barista part time, said he knows about the health effects of caffeine but continues to drink it anyway. "I have an addiction to caffeine, and I am aware of the dangers surrounding it, but I don't plan on stopping," Yenson said. The most common sources of caffeine include coffee, tea and cola.

Fda panel issues drug warning

A week ago today the U.S. Food & Drug Administration issued a strengthened warning about the dangers of antidepressants given to children 18 and under. While critics of the drugs caution that users of all ages should be concerned, some experts who testified before the FDA last week attribute the problem to over-prescribing the medications to people who are only mildly ill. "Strengthened warnings about the risk of suicide ideation and attempts with antidepressant medications in children should be communicated to physicians and consumers as soon as possible," said the joint FDA advisory committee in a statement. The FDA committee heard evidence that antidepressants can suppress Rapid Eye Movement and block the muscle paralysis that occurs in that stage so some people may even act out their nightmares. The regulation of waking, sleeping and dreaming occurs in the brainstem where serotonin neurons are clustered.
