Men's lacrosse suffers overtime loss at No. 2 Notre Dame

The Virginia men’s lacrosse team did not get the win it was hoping for Saturday night, but it did come closer to the performance that it has been aiming for. The Cavaliers (3-5, 0-2 ACC) fell against No. 2 Notre Dame at Arlotta Stadium in South Bend, Ind. in a back and forth contest that resulted in a heartbreaking overtime loss.

At first glance, this integral piece of the Virginia team may seem to be its offense—among the nation’s best, scoring 12.93 goals per game—however, this is not the most important component for its success. Rather, a great deal of the Cavaliers’ favorable postseason position can be attributed to freshman goaltender Matt Barrett.

The No. 8 Virginia men’s lacrosse team has been in a slump ever since its win against Syracuse March 1. In an effort to turn its season around and qualify for the ACC Tournament against No. 2 Duke — a team that has given them troubles in the past — the high-octane Blue Devil offense overpowered the Cavaliers, 17-15.
