College Council approves sidewalk project for front of Phi Kappa Psi fraternity

College Council approved funding Tuesday to pave and redesign the pathway in front of the Phi Kappa Psi Fraternity house overlooking Mad Bowl. Proponents of the sidewalk argued that the current pathway was unsafe to walk on, especially at night when many intoxicated students use the path to cross from Madison Avenue to Rugby Road, and during inclement weather during which the path becomes muddy and slippery.

Virginia State Police released a statement Monday confirming a forensic link between second-year College student Hannah Graham’s recent disappearance and Virginia Tech student Morgan Harrington’s death in 2009.

SafeRide, other safety measures see new scrutiny after Graham disappearance

University President Teresa Sullivan said the University would increase the number of SafeRide vans and SafeRide’s hours in an email message sent to the University community last Tuesday. The time extensions were sent to the community in error, however, and Sullivan included the correct hours in an email to students sent last Friday. While the University has added a fourth van, no changes to SafeRide operating hours has been made.

Student group aids Graham search effort

The Blue Ridge Mountain Rescue Group coordinated volunteer efforts last week in the city-wide search for missing second-year College student Hannah Graham, who was last seen early in the morning Sept. 13. More than a week later, members of the Contracted Independent Organization continue to help police search for Graham.

Students hold rally against gender violence

Students and members of the Charlottesville community gathered at the Rotunda Friday to rally against gender-based violence at the University and in the greater Charlottesville area.Fourth-year College student Greg Lewis, a leader of the rally, said it was held in response to the disappearance of second-year College student Hannah Graham, as well as what he said is a pattern of sexual assault and gender-based violence at the University.

McAuliffe announces ethics reform commission

In an effort to improve Virginia’s image in the wake of the recent corruption scandal involving former Gov. Bob McDonnell, Virginia Gov. Terry McAuliffe held a press conference Thursday to discuss the importance of ethics reforms.


Matthew flew in police custody from Galveston, Texas to arrive in Charlottesville at approximately 5:45 p.m. Friday.

Matthew incarcerated in Charlottesville

FBI agents escorted Jesse Matthew from a private plane at the Charlottesville-Albemarle Regional airport to the Charlottesville-Albemarle Regional Jail Friday evening at approximately 5:45 p.m. Matthew remains incarcerated without bond, charged with abduction with intent to defile in the disappearance of second-year College student Hannah Graham.

McAuliffe announced GEAR UP grant

Gov. Terry McAuliffe announced Wednesday Virginia is receiving $22 million in federal funds through the Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs. The government will allocate the funds over the next seven years to 16 school districts in Virginia, according to a press release.

Funlola Fagbohun, associate director of the first year experience, describes her experience working with OTP and how she strives to create a welcoming environment for first-years during orientation and beyond. Along with her role as associate director, summer Orientation leaders and OTP staff work continually to provide a safe and memorable experience for incoming students.
