McAuliffe announced GEAR UP grant

Gov. Terry McAuliffe announced Wednesday Virginia is receiving $22 million in federal funds through the Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs. The government will allocate the funds over the next seven years to 16 school districts in Virginia, according to a press release.

Route 29 Advisory Panel meets

The Route 29 Project Delivery Advisory Panel, comprised of local government representatives and business owners, met Thursday at the Virginia Center for Transportation Innovation and Research to discuss updates on the construction and traffic aspects of the Route 29 Solutions package.

Police reemphasize commitment to finding Graham

Charlottesville Police Chief Timothy Longo underscored his commitment to locating missing second-year College student Hannah Graham at a press conference Thursday, even as the trial process begins for Charlottesville resident Jesse Matthew, who is charged with abduction with intent to defile in connection with Graham’s disappearance. Matthew was arrested in Galveston, Texas Wednesday afternoon, and was denied bail Thursday morning as a fugitive from justice in Virginia.

Graham case prompts University response

Though attention has largely focused on the Charlottesville Police Department, the University has been working to maintain a sense of normalcy on Grounds in the wake of the disappearance of second-year College student Hannah Graham. The search for Graham, who was last seen in the early morning of Sept. 13, has reverberated strongly throughout the University community.

Health System wins heart care award

The University Health System received the ACTION Registry-Get With The Guidelines Gold Performance Achievement Award from the American College of Cardiology for its quality of treatment for heart attack patients.

First-Year Council elections ongoing

The first year class will vote this week to elect a class president and members of the First Year Council (FYC). The University Board of Elections (UBE) oversees the election, along with most student representative elections on grounds, said Krishna Korupolu, third-year College student and Chair of the UBE.

National Voter Registration Day Held in Charlottesville

By Mairead Crotty & Amirah AhmadCharlottesville and Albemarle County hosted a voter registration drive on the Downtown Mall Tuesday in honor of National Voter Registration Day.The event, which was the first National Voter Registration Day to be held in Charlottesville, served to both register and educate attendees about the state’s new voter ID law.The 2014 mid-term elections are a little more than a month away, and 471 Congressional seats and 36 governorships are at stake, including 11 House seats and one Senate seat in Virginia.

But much of their work goes into planning summer orientation sessions. Funlola Fagbohun, associate director of the first year experience, describes her experience working with OTP and how she strives to create a welcoming environment for first-years during orientation and beyond. Along with her role as associate director, summer Orientation leaders and OTP staff work continually to provide a safe and memorable experience for incoming students.
