Kester to co-direct nanoSTAR

Dr. Mark Kester will co-direct the University’s Institute for Nanoscale and Quantum Scientific and Technological Advanced Research, the University announced last week. The institute, nicknamed nanoSTAR, uses both graduate and undergraduate students and provides opportunities for cross-school collaboration for University researchers.

AMBER alert goes off on Grounds

An AMBER Alert reached students across Grounds last Wednesday, Feb. 19, as part of an effort to recover five-year-old Amiyah Monet Dallas. She was found alive later that day.

McAuliffe signs hybrid tax repeal

Gov. Terry McAuliffe signed into law last week a repeal of the $64 tax on hybrid cars in Virginia, first enacted last year. McAuliffe repealed the bill during an appearance on WTOP radio’s “Ask the Governor” program. The revised mandate will go into effect July 1, 2014 and affect approximately 75,000 hybrid vehicle owners in the state.

University to further develop Morven Farm

The University is currently working to further develop Morven Farms, a 2,913 acre University-owned property just south of Monticello and Ash Lawn-Highland, and will partner with architectural firm Hart Howerton to explore opportunities for continued growth and improving present initiatives at the farm.

Contested races draw higher voter turnout

Last year’s student body elections, which culminated in the passing of an amendment to the Honor Committee’s constitution, saw a turnout rate of 50.27 percent, up from the 40.53 percent rate in Spring 2013. University Board of Election Results tomorrow will show whether students broke this low turnout trend.

MRC finishes recruitment, begins interviews

The Minority Rights Coalition ended its recruitment process for members of new committees earlier this month and is now having interviews for the potential members. The new committees will help the broader organization provide services to the student body.

The past year-and-a-half has seen the University dive headfirst into the once-foreign frontier of online education, notably through its offering of more than a dozen massive open online courses, or MOOCs.

Students re-establish Queer & Allied Activism

Queer & Allied Activism was re-established at the University Tuesday evening. More than 20 individuals — including two University staff members — convened in the University’s LGBTQ Center for the first meeting since the activist organization dissolved last spring.

South Sudan diplomat addresses students

The African Studies Initiative hosted United States Ambassador Designate Larry André Tuesday evening for a lecture about recent conflict in South Sudan. André’s talk focused on the history of South Sudan — which became an independent nation in 2011 and has recently faced a series of ethnic conflicts.


	The Board of Visitors (above) met last Thursday and Friday to approve graduate tuition rates, among other things.

Board of Visitors increases graduate tuition

The Board of Visitors voted last week to increase the tuition rates for many graduate programs offered by the University, both in the College and other schools. The increases in tuition and fees range between 1.2 and 19.6 percent, with rates varying for in-state and out-of-state students.


Since 1991 the Women’s Center has given the Distinguished Alumna award to women contributing to a number of diverse fields.

Monday marked the start of the University’s Every Body Week, a campaign organized by the Women’s Resource Center in association with the University’s Coalition on Eating Disorders and Exercise Concerns.

Western Bypass faces roadblocks

The proposal to construct a western U.S. Route 29 bypass ran into a pair of roadblocks last week, as the Federal Highways Administration requested the Virginia Department of Transportation further review the project and the Albemarle County Board of Supervisors passed a resolution asking Gov. Terry McAuliffe to direct funds away from the project.
