Women's soccer hosts High Point in NCAA First Round

Ever since the Virginia women’s soccer team arrived at spring camp more than seven months ago, the focus has been on getting back to the NCAA tournament and avenging last season’s heartbreaking College Cup loss to UCLA in penalty kicks. Throughout the regular season, the team spoke of ambitious postseason goals, while reiterating that the next game on the schedule would be the most important.

Basketball teams announce new recruiting classes

Virginia men’s basketball coach Tony Bennett announced Wednesday afternoon that the team had signed the bulky Brewster Academy senior forward Jarred Reuter to a National Letter of Intent. Earlier in the day, Virginia women’s basketball coach Joanne Boyle also announced that high school senior post players Debra Ferguson, Moné Jones and Shakyna Payne would all head to Charlottesville for the 2015-16 season.

Cavaliers visit James Madison to start new season

The Virginia men’s basketball team will tip off its 2014-15 regular season this Friday night at James Madison in Harrisonburg, Virginia. Junior forward Evan Nolte and sophomore guard London Perrantes have been suspended for the game due to violations of team rules over the summer.

This summer, Virginia junior guard Justin Anderson collaborated with strength and conditioning coach Mike Curtis to lose a little weight and strike the proper ratio between body fat and muscle. Now a sleeker 225 pounds, Anderson said Curtis — dubbed the “best strength coach in the country” by coach Tony Bennett at the No. 9 Cavaliers’ Oct. 22 media day — helped him fine-tune his diet.

Men's basketball opens 2014-15 season, eyes ACC repeat

The No. 9 Virginia men’s basketball team returns to the hardwood Friday for the first time since falling to Michigan State in the NCAA tournament. Despite reigning as ACC regular season and tournament champions, the Cavaliers enter the 2014-15 campaign as just the fourth-highest ranked team in the ACC.

The Virginia football team (4-6, 2-4 ACC) dropped its fourth game in a row Saturday with a 34-20 loss to No. 2 Florida State (9-0, 6-0 ACC) in Tallahassee. The Cavaliers now must win their final two games if they hope to reach bowl eligibility.

Men's soccer survives physical clash against Hokies

Junior midfielder Todd Wharton converted a penalty kick for No. 15 Virginia (10-5-2, 4-3-2 ACC) in the 55th minute, which ultimately proved sufficient to take down Virginia Tech (7-8-2, 2-6-1), 1-0, for the second time this season to advance to the quarterfinals of the ACC tournament on Sunday.
