No. 1 Baseball drops two of three at Wake Forest

Top-ranked Virginia split a Friday doubleheader and fell by a run in a down-to-the wire Saturday finale, suffering its first losing weekend of 2014. The Cavaliers finished second in the ACC’s Coastal Division and earned the No. 3 seed in next week’s ACC Baseball Championship, which runs May 20-25 in Greensboro, N.C.


	Sophomore right fielder Joe McCarthy singled and walked twice each, knocked in a pair of runs and stole two bases to support freshman midweek starter Alec Bettinger, who improved to 6-0. McCarthy leads Virginia in doubles, steals, hits and total bases through 51 games.

No. 1 Baseball rams Virginia Commonwealth

Former Virginia baseball coach Dennis Womack delivered the ceremonial first pitch Tuesday night before the No. 1 Cavaliers faced off with in-state rival Virginia Commonwealth at Davenport Field. Then, Virginia and current dugout-man Brian O’Connor posted a wire-to-wire 12-3 win against the Rams to complete their home slate at 29-3.


	Junior second baseman Branden Cogswell was 3 for 4 with two RBI in Virginia’s 4-3 win Saturday afternoon.

No. 1 Baseball sweeps Georgia Tech

Sunday, the Virginia baseball team completed a three-game sweep of Costal Division competitor Georgia Tech before 4,698 fans at Davenport Field. The No. 1 Cavaliers (41-9, 21-6 ACC) improved to 9-0 in ACC series on the year while honoring graduating seniors Austin Young, Artie Lewicki and Whit Mayberry, all right-handed pitchers.


	Junior first baseman Mike Papi batted leadoff in Virginia’s win. He finished 2-4 with a walk, an RBI and a run scored.

No. 1 Baseball turns back Liberty, 8-2

The Virginia baseball team returned to action Wednesday night after a weeklong hiatus for final exams, playing in-state adversary Liberty at Davenport Field. The No. 1 Cavaliers (38-9, 18-6 ACC) doused the No. 24 Flames, 8-2, as 4,354 fans—the largest-ever crowd for a Virginia midweek home game—looked on.

A season to remember, in review: Women's soccer

The Virginia women’s soccer team had a record-breaking 2013 season that resulted in an ACC Regular Season Championship and a trip to the NCAA Final Four. Despite facing one of the hardest schedules in the country, the Cavaliers posted 24 wins with an average margin of victory of nearly three goals.

Men's tennis wins eighth consecutive ACC Championship

The No. 4 Virginia men’s tennis team continued its ACC dominance Sunday, defeating No. 9 North Carolina to clinch the program’s eighth straight ACC Tournament title and 10th in the past 11 years. With the victory against the Tar Heels, the Cavaliers extended their conference match win streak to 121 matches.


	McGee originally committed to play for coach Mike London at Richmond, but when London took the job at Virginia, McGee followed.

McGee to transfer following graduation

Virginia senior tight end Jake McGee announced Friday that he will transfer to another program after graduating in May. The Richmond native lettered three times for Virginia and paced Cavalier pass-catchers with 43 receptions and 345 receiving yards in 2013.

Softball sweeps Liberty in doubleheader

The Virginia softball team took both games of their doubleheader Wednesday afternoon against Liberty. The Cavaliers (8-40, 1-22 ACC) put forward a tremendous effort in all facets of the game to douse the Flames (7-42, 2-19 Big South) by a combined score of 16-4.

No. 1 Cavs splatter Spiders on 80's night, 13-0

The No. 1 Cavaliers smacked four round-trippers, freshman right-hander Alec Bettinger spun six lights-out frames and sophomore right fielder Joe McCarthy racked up five RBIs as Virginia posted a 13-0 win in its 141st all-time meeting with the Richmond Spiders.

Matt Barrett braves first-year onslaught

At first glance, this integral piece of the Virginia team may seem to be its offense—among the nation’s best, scoring 12.93 goals per game—however, this is not the most important component for its success. Rather, a great deal of the Cavaliers’ favorable postseason position can be attributed to freshman goaltender Matt Barrett.

Top-seed Virginia preps for start of ACCs

The No. 4 Virginia men’s tennis team begins its postseason in Cary, N.C. this weekend at the ACC Tournament. The Cavaliers have won the tournament title nine out of the last ten years, with 2006 being the lone exception as they fell to then-No. 3 Duke in the Finals, 4-3.

Cavaliers face Duke in ACC Tourney opener

It was just over a month ago on March 22 that the No. 14 Virginia women’s lacrosse team took a long, somber bus ride from Durham, N.C. back to Charlottesville. This was not the way the Cavaliers had expected their season to go. The preseason excitement was gone, as Virginia had fallen to 4-6 and 0-3 in the ACC after a 16-11 loss against No. 7 Duke.
