Offensive explosion carries Cavs over Huskies

The Cavaliers opened the 2003 season last night with a solid 4-2 win over Northeastern, bringing the Virginia record of consecutive games won against out-of-state, non-conference opponents to 37. Hatch scores late to lead Cavs to victory

Gillian Hatch took one look at the West Virginia defense and knew exactly what she had to do. Lined up for a free kick 20 yards from the goal with just under four minutes left in a scoreless season opener, the junior defender decided to ditch the designed play the coaches had called. Virginia volleyball wins weekend tournament

The Cavaliers won all three of their matches this weekend to take the Tiger Top Classic. Virginia dominated the competition, taking all nine games they played in the tournament in wins over Centenary, LSU and the University of Alabama-Birmingham. Virginia executed well in its finals win over Centenary, committing only nine errors in 104 attempts.

Graham to leave basketball team

Coach Debbie Ryan announced Friday that Virginia women's basketball player Cherrise Graham has decided to leave the program and will not be a member of the 2003-4 squad. The junior guard transferred to Virginia after her freshman season at Purdue.
