Football searches for answers

The Virginia football team is analyzing every aspect of its play following an overtime loss to Duke that dropped the team's record to .500, marking the first time the Cavs had lost back-to-back home games since 1992. "I don't think we showed up Saturday in the right frame of mind, and I think it took us a half to get going," Cavalier coach George Welsh said.

Cav field hockey blanks Bulldogs

The Virginia field hockey team held Yale to only five shots and two penalty corners in a stingy defensive effort as it defeated the Bulldogs 5-0 Sunday. On the offensive side of the ball, second-year Jessica Coleman provided the firepower, knocking through consecutive penalty corners and dishing an assist on a Lorraine Vizzuso shot off a corner to establish a 3-0 lead going into the half.

Say Goodbye to your seven win season

After Saturday's catastrophic loss to Duke in double overtime, many people have written off any chance the Virginia football team has to maintain its streak of consecutive seven-win seasons. An article in the Roanoke Times Monday referred to the seven-win plateau as "the stated goal" of George Welsh and his squad.

Bedeviled

Duke could lose every game for the remainder of the season, but after Saturday's performance against the Cavaliers, it won't make a difference. The Blue Devils (1-4, 1-1 ACC) outlasted a beleaguered Virginia squad to gain their first victory of the season in dramatic fashion.

Just one day later, Deacon outside hitter Trina Maso de Mayo notched a match-high 24 points to help Wake Forest defeat Virginia 15-12, 14-16, 15-6 and 15-13. "Fandemonium" at sporting events reaches dangerous levels

Last week I strolled into a book store, waded through oncoming traffic, brushed aside the snide remarks thrown my way by the hecklers who caught me glancing at Better Homes and Gardens and finally reached my destination: the sports section. Upon arriving in paradise, however, I stumbled upon the following "great" reads: "The Idiot's Guide to Football," "The Idiot's Guide to Tetherball" and "The Idiot's Guide to Anything and Everything that Moves." There was one glaring omission, though: "The Idiot's Guide to Being a Fan," whose absence on the bookshelf shocked me. It shouldn't have.
