Jackets sting Virginia 68-47

ATLANTA-Dining hall meals and eight o'clock classes have never sounded so good. The Virginia men's basketball team will be thrilled to get back to Charlottesville after capping a 1-3 ACC road trip with a 68-47 loss at Georgia Tech last night that was as frustrating for the Cavaliers as the score indicates. Virginia (15-8, 5-5 ACC) knew it would have to deal with the inside brawn of Yellow Jacket twin towers Alvin Jones and Jason Collier.

McGrath captures ACC Wrestler of Week honor

Ryan McGrath earned the ACC Wrestler of the Week Award yesterday, becoming the first Cavalier to reap that honor this season. McGrath won his last six matches, including back-to-back titles in the 184-pound class at both the Virginia State Wrestling Intercollegiate Championships and the American University Congressional Cup. Big East realignment may net ACC more Dance cards

As soon as the NCAA men's basketball tournament brackets were announced last March, Wake Forest Coach Dave Odom held up the format of the ACC schedule as the reason only three Conference teams made The Dance. Odom theorized that since ACC teams face each other twice during the regular season, each team had two losses to the unstoppable Blue Devils almost automatically, and most teams had at least one loss to Maryland or North Carolina.

Wrestlers nab second in tourney

The Virginia wrestling team finished second in the seven-team American University Congressional Cup tournament Sunday, as five grapplers reached the finals in their respective weight classes. Led by second year Ryan McGrath, who captured Virginia's only win of the day at 184, the Cavaliers recorded 73.5 points to place 42.5 points behind the tournament champion, Hofstra. Carolina edges Cavs in overtime

CHAPEL HILL, N.C.-A back-and-forth game between the best and third-worst women's basketball teams in the ACC came down to a shot that Virginia never took. North Carolina (12-10, 4-7 ACC) snapped the Cavaliers' nine-game Conference winning streak with a 66-63 overtime victory at Carmichael Auditorium as the Cavs (17-6, 9-2) failed to take advantage of their final possession. With 10.1 seconds remaining in overtime, Virginia took the ball near midcourt after a timeout.

Virginia fails to snap Duke win streak

DURHAM, N.C.-Duke was coming off a tiring, emotional overtime victory at North Carolina Thursday, but the Virginia men's basketball team could not snap the Blue Devils' 31-game ACC win streak, losing a 106-86 decision Saturday in Cameron Indoor Stadium. Welsh sounds off on gridiron recruits

The 63-21 beating the Cavaliers absorbed at the hands of Illinois a month ago in the Micronpc.com Bowl was still fresh in his mind, but Virginia football Coach George Welsh chose to focus on the future of the program in his press conference yesterday, a day after the Cavs inked 22 high school recruits. "Overall, there's a lot of speed in this class, a lot of athleticism," Welsh said of a group that includes 14 skill position players and seven linemen.

The 6-foot-8 forward has traveled the world from Africa, to France, then to Texas before arriving in Charlottesville.
