Virginia volleyball seeks to end 11-game skid

It’s no secret that it has been as rough season for the Virginia volleyball team thus far. The team has lost 11 games in a row en route to a 3-13 start to their season, and have been searching for a way to salvage their season as ACC play opened up.

Offensive report card

Prevalent turnovers and poor timing between junior quarterback Kurt Benkert and his receiving corps, plus a lack of cohesion on the front lines, led in part to Virginia’s 0-3 start to the season.

Defensive report card

Virginia’s most recent victory against the Blue Devils epitomized what the Cavalier defense should be. Virginia forced six turnovers, including five interceptions, en route to a 34-20 victory.

Although a win is cause for celebration, with the road ahead it may be time for concern rather than jubilation heading into week 5.

TOBIN: Don’t get too excited just yet

For once, Virginia football didn’t play like Virginia football this past Saturday. The Cavaliers didn’t fall to an FCS team in an embarrassing fashion. The defense didn’t get its lid blown off and give up over 40 points. The coaches didn’t completely mismanage the clock and rush their placekicker up to miss a chip-in shot.

Junior first baseman Pavin Smith was named a freshman all-American in his freshman year. Smith goes into his junior year after being second on the team with 57 RBI.

BLANK: New leaders in the clubhouse

Clement, Haseley and Smith are considered seasoned veterans of the 2017 team. Whereas they won their tournament with the help of numerous older teammates, who had years of Omaha experience, this upcoming season the majority of postseason experience stems from the freshmen on that 2015 team.
