No. 7 Cavaliers spoil Spiders' debut, 13-12

The seventh-ranked Virginia men’s lacrosse team spoiled the Richmond Spiders’ inaugural Division I game Saturday by way of a tight 13-12 victory. With the victory, the Cavaliers remained undefeated, moving to 2-0 on the season.

No. 7 Virginia bests No. 12 Loyola in OT, 14-13

The No. 7 Virginia men’s lacrosse team opened the 2014 season with an exhilarating overtime victory against No. 12 Loyola Thursday night at Klöckner Stadium. After watching a 12-4 lead evaporate in the fourth quarter, Virginia needed a goal with less than one second remaining to force overtime and squeeze out a win.

Eagles clip Cavaliers late, 69-65

The Virginia women’s basketball team travelled to Chestnut Hill, Mass. for Thursday night’s matchup against Boston College having won four of five games. The Cavaliers, however, stumbled against the struggling Eagles, losing 69-65 after blowing a 15-point second half lead and coming up just short in a last-minute comeback.

No. 20 Cavaliers win sixth straight, 77-67

Coming off an emotional win against No. 25 Pittsburgh, the No. 20 Virginia men’s basketball team faced a possible letdown game against Boston College Wednesday night. A late Eagles rally cut a 21-point lead to just six with less than a minute to play, but the Cavaliers hung on for a 77-67 win.

Cavaliers sign 15 to National Letters of Intent

After a dismal 2013 campaign, the Virginia football team found itself ranked in the top 25 Wednesday. The Cavaliers boast the No. 25 incoming recruiting class — fourth in the ACC — according to ESPN, inking 15 players to National Letters of Intent on Signing Day in addition to two recruits who enrolled at the University in January.

After a disappointing season a year ago, the Virginia men’s lacrosse team is ready to get back out onto the field and restore its winning ways. Ranked in the top-10 nationally in all four major preseason polls, the Cavaliers are aiming for nothing short of an eighth NCAA title.

Virginia softball kicks off its season this weekend at the USC Upstate Tournament in Spartanburg, S.C. The 2014 edition of Cavalier softball looks and feels much different than the team which took to the diamond last year, and five games spread throughout the three-day tournament will go a long way in determining the team’s identity.

Monday night ice

It’s Monday night. A handful of people are milling about the Main Street Arena lobby. Some head to the bar, while others congregate around the ice. Two men carefully prep the ice and line up equipment along the edges of the rink. Finally, once the ice is deemed ready, everyone wearing snow boots, boat shoes and sneakers steps onto the ice for the big event: curling.

After emerging from a crucial road victory against No. 25 Pittsburg, the Virginia men’s basketball team will return home Thursday night seeking to extend its winning streak to six games versus Boston College.

No. 14 Virginia dominates VCU, USC, stays perfect

The No. 14 Virginia women’s tennis team continued its strong start to the season, trouncing No. 44 VCU and No. 33 South Carolina in Charlottesville this weekend. Virginia (3-0) easily defeated VCU 6-1 Friday before fighting for a 5-2 victory against the Gamecocks Sunday.

Swimming splits NC State meet

After an emotional meet last weekend against rival North Carolina, the Virginia swim and dive teams had mixed results Saturday against North Carolina State. The No. 9 Virginia women’s team defeated the Wolfpack, 178.5-115.5, while the No. 20 Virginia men’s team fell to No. 21 NC State, 157-141.

Neither team led by more than four points during the entirety of Sunday’s game in Pittsburgh. The score changed hands seven times and was tied 17 different times. This was the type of game that the Cavaliers usually come out on the wrong side of.

Women’s basketball wins second straight, dominates Clemson 80-43

The Virginia women’s basketball team scrapped the suspense early Sunday afternoon against Clemson, reeling off 17 straight points to transform a one-point deficit with 15:19 to play in the first half into a 16-point lead with 11:37 to go. The Cavaliers carried their advantage into the break and then piled on the points in the second half to win 80-43.

But much of their work goes into planning summer orientation sessions. Funlola Fagbohun, associate director of the first year experience, describes her experience working with OTP and how she strives to create a welcoming environment for first-years during orientation and beyond. Along with her role as associate director, summer Orientation leaders and OTP staff work continually to provide a safe and memorable experience for incoming students.
