Men conclude season, place 26th at NCAAs

Virginia brought its season to a close on Saturday with a 26th place finish at the Men’s NCAA Championships. The Cavaliers scored 23 points, the sixth most among all ACC teams. The finish marked a slight improvement over last season’s NCAA meet, where Virginia finished 27th with 22 points.

Cavs post strong showing at Texas, Raleigh Relays

Virginia track and field continued its season with two meets this weekend, the Texas Relays and Raleigh Relays. The Cavaliers set a slew of personal bests and put up solid results while facing some of nation’s best teams.

Michigan State knocks Virginia out of NCAA Tournament

NEW YORK — At some point, the Virginia men’s basketball team’s luck had to run out. They had won an ACC regular season title, an ACC Tournament championship and had made it to the Sweet Sixteen, extending one of the most successful seasons in the program’s recent history. Friday night at Madison Square Garden, the Cavaliers’ stunning run came to an end as they lost 61-59 to Michigan State, bowing out of the NCAA Tournament.

The view from the stands

Perhaps the most appealing thing about the Virginia men’s basketball team is the fact that they play as a team. However, throughout the ACC and NCAA Tournaments, the entire team has not been accounted for.


	Junior catcher Nate Irving started Virginia’s 15th-inning breakthrough with a ground-rule double to left field.

Virginia duels Longwood

The Cavaliers, winners of every one of their six weekend series, draw swords with the Longwood Lancers (12-13, 2-4 Big South) this Thursday at Davenport Field. Whether Irving or Coman starts the game behind the plate, he will enjoy the respect of his fellow backstop.


	Sitting at 4-6 (0-3 ACC) with six games to play in the regular season, senior defender Lauren Goerz and the No. 16 Virginia women’s lacrosse team are in danger of missing the NCAA Tournament. The Cavaliers will look to gain momentum Wednesday night in a home game against Old Dominion.

Women's Lacrosse hosts Old Dominion

Unfortunately for Virginia, a setback Saturday against No. 8 Duke dropped the team back to two games below .500 – a situation where every game is becoming more and more critical. On Wednesday night, the No. 16 Cavaliers (4-6, 0-3 ACC) will again have a chance to get back on track when they face Old Dominion at home (3-6).

Beautiful upset fever

I will argue until I’m blue in the face with Super Bowl supporters, World Series apologists and BCS nutjobs alike that March Madness is the best show we put on all year. But what people tend to forget is that the frequency of upsets is exactly what makes it so.


	Sophomore right-hander Josh Sborz tossed five strong innings between Friday night and Saturday afternoon in the Cavaliers’ milestone win.

No. 2 Cavaliers rally past Hurricanes

The No. 2 Virginia baseball team travelled to Coral Gables, Fla. this weekend for a three-game series against the Miami Hurricanes. The Cavaliers lost by six runs in the Saturday-night opener but fought back for a pair of tightly contested victories to improve to 6-0 in weekend series on the year.

Four minutes remained in a lopsided game. After recording his second block of the game and prolonging a night that rendered Memphis an ant underneath a giant Virginia defensive magnifying glass, Mike Tobey gathered the ball at the top of the 3-point arc with oodles of time remaining on the shot clock and his defender hanging back in the lane.

No. 10 Virginia set for clash with Keydets

The eighth-ranked Virginia men’s lacrosse team is back in action tonight, as VMI comes to Charlottesville. The Cavaliers have never lost a game to this in-state foe, owning a spotless 20-0 record with an average margin of victory of more than 17 goals going back to 1949.


	Sophomore Stephanie Nauta is 12-1 in singles play this season.

No. 6 women's tennis punishes Panthers, Irish

The No. 6 Virginia women’s tennis team won both conference matches this weekend, improving to 6-1 in ACC play. After the Cavaliers (12-5, 6-1 ACC) defeated No. 22 Notre Dame, they welcomed new rival Pittsburgh to Charlottesville for the first time. Virginia shut out the Panthers to complete the weekend sweep.
