Scott, Reynolds running down a dream

Few jobs are as prestigious as being a professional sports player. Fewer jobs require the same level of unceasing physical and mental exertion. Two former Virginia stars, basketball player Mike Scott and football player LaRoy Reynolds, are putting in the effort and living the life so many people wish they could have.

No. 5 field hockey looks to remain undefeated

Though still early in the season, the No. 5 Virginia field hockey team is already shaping up to be an offensive juggernaut and national championship contender. The team will look to carry its recent momentum into a midweek home matchup Wednesday evening against Richmond.

No. 4 women's soccer enters ACC play undefeated

After winning its first six games, the No. 4 Virginia women’s soccer team could not have opened the season any better. The Cavaliers tallied 25 total goals while only allowing three, as they dominated all six non-conference opponents they faced.

How I made SportsCenter

On June 28, 2013, I was on SportsCenter. Or rather, my feet were. My summer internship with the San Francisco Giants’ AA-affiliate and my home team, the Richmond Flying Squirrels, landed me and my awesome pig-chasing shoes a spot on the program’s infamous Not Top 10.

Volleyball sees mixed results in California

The Virginia volleyball team competed in the Pepperdine Invitational in Malibu, Calif. this weekend, dropping a pair of 3-1 decisions to Colorado State and Pepperdine before posting a 3-2 comeback against UC Santa Barbara to close out the tournament. Although the Cavaliers (4-2) only went 1-2 on the weekend, freshman Haley Kole had something of a coming-out party.

Feeling re-energized

Following the Virginia football team’s blowout loss to Oregon, I was feeling burned out as a sports fan. The rest of my weekend—consisting of running into Virginia basketball players and watching Week 1 NFL action—has me feeling re-energized.

Necessary roughness

A crowd of 58,502 was on hand to witness the brutal 59-10 thrashing No. 2 Oregon doled out to Virginia Saturday afternoon, the largest crowd at Scott Stadium since a 38-0 blowout loss to Virginia Tech in the final game of the 2011 season. That fact was not lost on many of the Cavalier players.

Oregon demolishes Virginia, 59-10

Oregon’s speed and athleticism were on full display from kickoff Saturday, as the No. 2 Ducks’ (2-0) Marcus Mariota and De’Anthony Thomas repeatedly gashed the Virginia (1-1) defense in a 49-point drubbing at Scott Stadium.
