Team falls 3-0 against Hurricanes, Seminoles

While avoiding the Charlottesville snow in Florida, the Virginia volleyball team nevertheless slipped in its two weekend matches against Miami and Florida State. Friday against the Hurricanes (19-3, 10-3 ACC), the Cavaliers (8-15, 2-11 ACC) failed to reach 20 points in any set and were swept 3-0 in Coral Gables.

Cavs host Duke for Senior Night

The Virginia field hockey team will host No. 5 Duke during its regular season finale Saturday night on a Senior Night game the Cavaliers hope will provide as much practical significance as it does symbolic. The team will honor its three seniors, midfielder Alexandra Jahnle, defender Rachel Jennings and goalkeeper Adrienne Ostroff.

Cavs stumble in ITA finals

Although a number of players on the Virginia men's and women's tennis teams reached the final rounds of the ITA Atlantic Regional earlier this week, they failed to capture a single title. Junior Jarmere Jenkins and the duo of senior Drew Courtney and junior Julien Uriguen reached the final round for the Cavalier men in Charlottesville, but all suffered untimely losses with the ultimate prize on the line.

One of Virginia's most successful athletic programs is at it again. The women's rowing team - a perennial national title contender - kicked off its fall campaign with a win at the Head of the Charles Sunday. The Cavaliers captured the championship eights title while also finishing runner-up in the championship fours.

Virginia finishes second-to-last in opener

The Virginia women's swimming team opened its season placing fifth out of six teams at the Southern Methodist University Classic which was held in Dallas, Texas last weekend. The Cavaliers, who sent eight of their swimmers to the highly competitive meet, tallied 248 total points throughout the two-day event. Junior Christine Olson paced the Cavalier contingent with a first-place finish during the B Final of the 200 breaststroke at 2:14.90, which ranked as the second-fastest time of the entire event. The Chicago Bears have "Bear Down." My beloved New Orleans Saints opt for the more colloquial and more expressive, "Who Dat Say Dey Gon' Beat Dem Saints?!" But for several teams locked in the cellar of the NFL standings this year, a new slogan has emerged: "Suck for Luck." Apart from its secondary function as an inappropriate innuendo, the new catchphrase applied to such teams as the Colts and Dolphins has become a rallying cry for embattled fans who are both resigned to their team's present futility and giddy at the prospect of cheering for standout Stanford quarterback Andrew Luck.
