Reflections on opening weekend

Now that the Major League Baseball season is officially under way - and in conformity with modern media's rules of knee-jerk, way-too-early reactions - it's about time for some thoughts and reflections regarding the first weekend of the 2011 season. Let's start with a look at several of the early favorites to make a run at the World Series.

The Cavaliers arrived at Virginia Tech this weekend ranking No. 1 in two polls. After outscoring the Hokies 37-8 during a three-game sweep, the team made a case to be the country's unanimous top team. Virginia (28-2, 11-1 ACC) plated 17 runs in four innings Friday, as the team took the opener 18-3.

Although one more weekend of March Madness still remains, Jimmer-mania finally has come to a halt. As I watched Jimmer Fredette's final game in a college uniform, I was awed - not by the 32 points that he scored, but rather by the 29 shots that he took and from where he took them.
