Junior guard Faith Randolph scored 24 points Thursday night in Chapel Hill, but North Carolina's Stephanie Mavunga had the last laugh. Mavunga put back a Tar Heel miss to down Virginia at the buzzer.

No. 15 North Carolina beats Virginia on last-second shot, 72-70

The Virginia women’s basketball team battled to the last second Thursday night against No. 15 North Carolina, but a buzzer-beater by the Tar Heels, who hadn’t scored in four minutes, sent the Cavaliers home with another top-25 loss, 72-70. Sophomore forward Stephanie Mavunga scored the game-winner on a last-second putback.


Coach Joanne Boyle said Virginia must continue to look for senior center Sarah Imovbioh in the post against the Tar Heels. Imovbioh will also have her hands full guarding North Carolina's Stephanie Mavunga, the ACC Player of the Week three times this season.

Women’s basketball braces for No. 15 North Carolina

The Virginia women’s basketball team is looking to channel the positive energy from it’s win against Virginia Tech Sunday into its two remaining regular season games, against No. 15 North Carolina and No. 8 Louisville, and beat a top-25 team for the first time this season.

Women's basketball dominates Hokies, 73-59

In a tale of two halves, the Virginia women’s basketball team snapped a four-game losing skid with a 73-59 win over Virginia Tech at home Sunday afternoon. The win adds a half-point to the Cavaliers’ total in the Commonwealth Clash. The Cavaliers have also now won 18-straight against the Hokies.


Sophomore floor general Mikayla Venson averages 15.1 points per game to  lead Virginia but scored only eight on 14 shots in the loss to Virginia  Tech.

Women’s basketball downs NC State, 71-63

After only attempting seven free throw attempts and missing four of them in its last game, the Virginia women’s basketball team practiced its foul shots minutes before Thursday night’s game against NC State—and it paid off.


Virginia captain senior Mitchell Frank is one of eight Cavaliers set to compete in the Dallas Challenger. The pro-level event is part of the ATP Challenger Tour, and Virginia's participants will likely be made to play through qualifiers for a spot in the main draw.

Weekend Previews: Dec. 5-7

The Skinny: The Cavaliers are 8-0 for the first time since 2003 largely thanks to their stifling defense, which currently ranks No. 1 nationally in scoring. Their most recent triumph came Wednesday, 76-65, at the expense of former ACC foe Maryland, who scored 13 points less than their season average against Virginia.

Imovbioh, women's basketball go 1-1 at Florida International Tournament

The Virginia women’s basketball team split a pair of games in the Florida International Tournament this past Thanksgiving weekend, losing in the last five seconds against Toledo on Friday before coming back with a double-digit win against host Florida International on Sunday. With less than 10 seconds left in the game, Toledo senior guard Inma Zanoguera dribbled the ball down the court, sidestepped her defender, Virginia sophomore guard Breyana Mason, and hit her fourth three-point shot of the night to give Toledo a 64-62 lead. With five seconds left in the game Virginia freshman guard Mikayla Venson, who prior to Zanoguera’s shot had hit a jumper to give Virginia a 62-61 lead, attempted a three-point shot of own, but it bounced off the rim to give Toledo the win.

In nearly every circumstance, the early-recruiting process that exists in basketball hurts recruits such as Boatright, Peebles and Kelly by removing them from the nationwide recruiting process.

Women's basketball releases schedule

The Virginia women’s basketball team’s schedule for the 2014-2015 season was released Tuesday. The Cavaliers hope to improve on their 14-17 record from a year ago in which they failed to make the NCAA Tournament. Virginia’s schedule features 17 home games, eight of which will be against ACC opponents.
