1, 15, 41 — three numbers splashed across the front of hundreds of t-shirts, lovingly etched onto the side of Beta Bridge and formed with sticky notes upon dozens of dormitory windows. They are the jersey numbers of University students and football team members Lavel Davis Jr., D’Sean Perry and Devin Chandler — three students who were killed in a shooting on Grounds one year ago.

Virginia women’s basketball hosted Campbell Sunday afternoon at John Paul Jones Arena. The Cavaliers (2-0, 0-0 ACC) were coming off an impressive performance in their season opener when they beat Maryland Eastern Shore 76-52. The Camels (2-1, 0-0 Colonial Atlantic) had also started their season strong and one of their wins included a 71 point victory against NC Wesleyan. Ultimately, after a close first half, Virginia pulled away and won the game 74-49.

This is no exception in the Iota Beta chapter of the Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Inc., the members of which see the unique art form as a way to bond and assert their identity within their community.

Virginia rowing swept almost every varsity event at the annual Rivanna Romp Sunday in Charlottesville. The team was victorious against a field that included Duke, Louisville, Minnesota, Navy and North Carolina in the Varsity 8+ and Varsity 4+ events.

Last weekend saw No. 5 Virginia field hockey travel to College Park, Md. for the first and second rounds of the 2023 NCAA championship, facing off against No. 13 Saint Joseph’s Friday and No. 4 Maryland Sunday. Friday afternoon saw the Cavaliers (13-6, 3-3 ACC) edge out the Hawks (16-5, 7-0 A 10) 2-1, followed by a dominant 4-0 shutout victory Sunday against the Terrapins (17-6, 6-2 Big 10). These wins mean that Virginia has secured a place in the NCAA semifinals for the sixth time in program history.

The setting at Klöckner Stadium was the same as always for Virginia women’s soccer — the student section filled with orange and blue, Charlottesville families scattered on the hill opposite the bleachers and Coach Steve Swanson on the sideline.

The Honor Committee amended a bylaw to extend time for the Panel for Sanction to convene from three days to one week during their meeting Sunday. The Committee also considered the logistics of an information-gathering survey to record student perspectives of the Honor system. The meeting had 21 out of 29 members present, meaning the Committee could vote on matters concerning the constitution or bylaws.

The University is in the process of installing solar arrays on the new School of Data Science building and a University facility on Old Ivy Road, continuing a commitment to sustainability. Solar arrays are already present at other key locations across Grounds — the arrays help reduce energy costs and align with the University's 2030 Sustainability Plan, which aims to make the University carbon neutral by 2030.

The University received 42,093 early action and early decision applications for first-year admission to the Class of 2028, marking a 3.4 percent increase from the 40,713 early applications received for the Class of 2027. Applications — which were due by Nov. 1 — included 10,593 Virginians and 29,334 out-of-state applicants.

After a strong performance at the Southeast Invitational in which eight wrestlers placed against stiff competition, Virginia wrestling had its sights set on the 2023 Mountaineer Invitational. The invitational — which was hosted by Appalachian State in Boone N.C. — featured wrestlers from the Cavaliers (0-0, 0-0 ACC), the Mountaineers (0-1, 0-0 SBC), Air Force, Gardner-Webb and Presbyterian. With the level of competition at a slightly lower standard than in their previous large meet, Virginia put forth a far stronger showing.

Virginia women’s volleyball snapped its recent losing streak, coming back from a 2-1 deficit to defeat Notre Dame in five sets at Memorial Gymnasium. Despite the Fighting Irish (10-14, 4-12 ACC) forcing the match to a 14-14 scoreline in the fifth set, the Cavaliers (10-15, 3-12 ACC) maintained their composure and came out on top, earning their third ACC victory of the season.

In a video sent to the University community, University President Jim Ryan formally invited community members to a tolling of the Chapel bells at 12:55 p.m. Monday in memory of football players and University students Devin Chandler, Lavel Davis Jr. and D’Sean Perry, who died in last year’s shooting.
