Hurricane Floyd misses University, but still hits home

Cavalier Daily Staff Writers

As Hurricane Floyd makes its exit from Virginia, University students are checking on their families' situations. Some students have family and friends living in Georgia, Florida and South Carolina that have been affected by Floyd.

Second-year College student Thomas Koch's family lives in Satellite Beach, Fla.

Koch said his family evacuated to Orlando.

The Koch property had "bushes and fences pulled up" and their house's "windows [are] boarded up and will probably stay up for the duration of the [hurricane] season," he said.

Many students living in the path of Hurricane Floyd shared Koch's experience.

"It was weird being here, but I didn't feel connected to it at all," third-year College student Sarah Walker said.

Walker's family, who lives in Columbia, S.C., helped house two other families that evacuated from the coast.

The long distance phone lines in her parents' area were down, preventing her from getting in touch with them since the evacuation, except over e-mail, Walker said.

The effects of Floyd may be far-reaching for students, depending on how their family and friends fared during the hurricane.

Members of the Office of the Dean of Students expressed their willingness to help students affected by Floyd.

Dean of Students Penny Rue said she has not heard of any concerns expressed by students, but that her office "will be happy to work with students" should the need arise.

"We'd help the students in any way we could," Asst. Dean of Students Aaron Laushway said. "If there are any students that need help they should not hesitate to call."

Laushway said if students need to leave the University to help out at home, the Office of the Dean of Students will assist them by helping them get in touch with their academic advisor and dean.

At its peak, Floyd, formed Sept. 8, produced 155-mph winds, making it nearly a Category 5 storm.
