Students face difficulty in obtaining game tickets

Despite a nearly $80 million dollar Scott Stadium expansion, students will come up short if they are looking for tickets for the Virginia-Virginia Tech game.

The ticket office sold out of student tickets Friday for the Oct. 2 game.

Some students, however, remain optimistic that they will be able to find tickets for their friends and family elsewhere.

Cavalier fans also have grabbed up all the remaining reserve tickets for other home games except against the University of Buffalo Nov. 13.

Dick Mathias, asst. director for ticket office operations, said the stadium expansion would not increase student seating or reserve ticket availability this year, but will help next year.

Part of the reserve ticket shortage results from an increase in season ticket sales from 26,185 to 29,023.

"Everything that was added as part of the stadium expansion was sold as season tickets," Mathias said.

He said he expected reserve ticket shortages for more popular games such as the Tech game, but that others usually don't sell out so fast.

The Duke game selling out so early "is a little more abnormal," he added.

Despite steady initial ticket sales for all games, the athletic department officials cautioned that student attendance at games often is irregular.

"The Tech game being sold out is not an indicator of" a possible sharp rise in student attendance at games this year, Sports Marketing Director Andrew Rader said. "The history of student turnout is great for the first game and then it drops from there."

Athletic Director Terry Holland echoed these concerns about student attendance.

"We are trying to provide video boards and any other gimmick that will bring the students to the stadium rather than staying at home to watch on TV or hang out in the frat house," Holland said.
