No. 3 Carolina comes next for confident Cavs

The Cavalier women's soccer team looks to extend its four-game winning streak against North Carolina tonight at Klöckner Stadium.

The No. 3 Tar Heels (13-2, 4-0), winners of 15 national championships, bring a history of success to tonight's game. The No.8 Cavs (11-4, 4-1 ACC), however, are not intimidated.

"They're just any other team," fifth-year forward Jill Maxwell said. "I think in the past it has been [intimidating], but we're not scared."

"I feel like this is the best team we've put together here at Virginia," said Virginia Coach April Heinrichs. "One would think that this is our best chance. We have depth we've never had."

Fourth-year forward Angela Hucles leads the team with eight goals, and her six assists rank second to midfielder Katie Tracy. Maxwell is close behind with seven goals.

But they face an impressive array of players from North Carolina. The Tar Heels are led by senior defender Lorrie Fair, who played for the national team in the World Cup this past summer. Senior midfielders Laurie Schwoy and Rebekah McDowell joined Fair on the College Soccer Online preseason All-America team. Soccer America tabbed senior defender Lindsay Stoecker for its All-America team.

"North Carolina is an explosive team," Heinrichs said.

Cavalier goalkeepers Julie Harris and Megan Boehm will try to keep the high-powered Tar Heels from finding the net. So far, the tandem has done a solid job in goal, combining for five shutouts.

The Tar Heels will be the second high-ranked opponent the Cavs will face this season. The first game was a 2-1 victory over then-second-ranked Florida, and the team is hoping for another upset.

"We can hang with top-five teams if we play our best," second-year forward Darci Borski said.

Following the Carolina game, the Cavaliers will host 11th-ranked Wake Forest Sunday. The Demon Deacons are led by two sophomores, forward Emily Taggart and goalkeeper Erin Regan.

"I expect a very, very, very tight game," Wake Forest coach Tony da Luz said. "We're actually fairly similar teams in that we both try to possess the ball and we have a lot of team speed"
