ACC honors Jones for fifth time this season

The ACC handed out two of its weekly football honors to a pair of Cavaliers for their part in Virginia's 45-38 victory over then-No. 7 Georgia Tech.

Tailback Thomas Jones was honored as the ACC Offensive Back of the Week, leading the Cav attack with 213 yards and two touchdowns on 39 carries. On the other side of the field, defensive back Chris Williams, who tallied seven tackles while helping the Virginia defense limit the vaunted Yellow Jacket offense to 447 total yards, was designated as the Rookie of the Week.

Cota secure in his innocence

North Carolina point guard Ed Cota, now suspended because of his alleged part in a Halloween-evening fight, told The Associated Press he feels the charge is "nonsense."

Cota claims all he did was grab the pant leg of one of the people involved in the incident, attempting to break up the fight.

"I don't need a lawyer" to clear myself of the charges, Cota said. "This is a bunch of nonsense."

New York City product and backup guard Terrence Newby was also involved in the altercation. Both will appear in Orange County District Court Dec. 6. The Tar Heel schedule begins Nov. 22 against Southern California in the Maui Invitational.

The Heels previously had announced neither player would take the court until the legal issue was resolved.

Ottawa suspends holdout Yashin

The Ottowa Senators suspended center Alexei Yashin for the remainder of the season.

Instead of playing out the final year of his contract with the Senators, in which he would receive $3.6 million, Yashin refused to play unless the Ottawa management renegotiated that contract.

The Senators gave Yashin a final deadline to report by midnight Monday evening. When he did not, the team took action.

"Alexei has been suspended for the balance of this season, including the playoffs," Senators General Manager Marshall Johnston told the AP. "We will not consider a trade."
