Guthridge reinstates Cota, Newby

North Carolina Coach Bill Guthridge announced yesterday that guards Ed Cota and Terrence Newby will be reinstated to the men's basketball team.

Newby and Cota were suspended from the team after being charged with misdemeanor assault following a Halloween night brawl. They sat out two exhibition games and more than a week of practice during their suspensions.

"I believe they have been truthful to me, and I continue to support them," Guthridge told ESPN. "UNC police have done a thorough job investigating, and now we have to let the judicial system deal with the matter ... Should something develop or other information come forward at a later date, I will take appropriate action."

Three soccer players earn awards

Prior to the start of the 1999 ACC Men's Soccer Tournament, three Virginia soccer players received Conference accolades.

First-year midfielder Kyle Martino was named the Rookie of the Year Wednesday night and also gathered All-ACC First Team honors. He was the only Cavalier chosen to the first team, although fellow midfielders Steve Totten and Ryan Trout were named to the All-ACC Second Team.

Martino is second on the team with seven assists, including two game-winning assists. The first year also scored four goals for the Cavs this season, including game winners against North Carolina and Marshall.

Totten was selected to Soccer America's Team of the Week Oct. 11. He has scored 34 career points on 12 goals and 10 assists, including three game-winning assists and one game-winning goal.

Trout also was named a Second-Team Preseason All-American by Soccer America and was selected to the Coca-Cola Classic All-Tournament team earlier this season. Trout enters the ACC Tournament as Virginia's leading scorer with 21 points coming from nine assists and six goals. His nine assists are first on the team and he is tied for second on the squad with six goals scored.

Trout became the eighth player in Virginia men's soccer history to score four goals in a single game after the Appalachian State game Sept. 8.
