ODU hands field hockey third loss

For the third straight year, the Virginia field hockey team bowed out of the NCAA Tournament after a 3-0 loss to Old Dominion. The Cavs lost in the first round Saturday in College Park, Md.

The Lady Monarchs' Marina DiGiacomo scored a pair of goals to help ODU defeat Virginia, while Adrienne Yoder also made a goal for the Lady Monarchs.

Although ODU led 2-0 at the half, the Cavs had hoped this game would be similar to the game between the two earlier this season, where Virginia was also down 2-0, but came back to send the game into overtime.

With Saturday's loss, the Cavs conclude their 1999 campaign at 13-8.

Old Dominion lost to ACC foe Maryland Sunday in a 3-2 overtime loss. The Final Four of the NCAA Tournament will be held Friday.

Young inks letter of intent

Virginia basketball Coach Pete Gillen announced yesterday that 6-foot-5 forward Maurice Young has signed a national letter of intent with Virginia.

The Michellville, Md. native verbally committed to the Cavaliers this summer.

Young averaged 22 points and seven rebounds a game for Bishop McNamara High School as a junior last year and was one of the top three scorers in the Washington Catholic Athletic Conference. He also enters his senior season as the school's all-time leading scorer with 1,418 points.

"We're thrilled to have Maurice Young join our basketball family," Gillen said in a press release. "He's been extremely well coached by Derek Campbell at Bishop McNamara. Moe's very versatile with ability to slash to the basket, shoot the three-pointer and go to the offensive glass. He's a terrific player who will be able to play several positions at the college level."

Cross country finishes in top seven at regionals

The Virginia women's cross country team placed sixth at the NCAA Southeast Regional Saturday in Greenville, S.C., while the men placed seventh.

Cavs Jennifer Owens and Bobby Thiele led the Cavaliers: Owens finished eighth overall in the 5K race with a time of 17:29, while Thiele finished 12th in the 10K men's division in a time of 30:21.

The men's seventh place finished was just two points shy of fifth place.

Thiele qualified automatically for the NCAA Championship because he was one of the top four individuals whose teams did not qualify for the Championship. Owens' performance in Regionals earned her an at-large bid to the NCAA Championship.

The NCAA Championship will take place Monday in Bloomington, Ind.

Six field hockey stars earn honors

Cavalier senior captains Meredith Elwell and Laura Lindsay were both named South Regional All-Americans yesterday. Elwell earned a first-team spot, while Lindsay earned second-team honors.

Also on the first team are midfielder Lorraine Vizzuso and back Jessica Coleman, while Cav keeper Becky Worthington and sweeper Julia Richardson join Lindsay on the second team.

As a result, the Huskies dropped to No. 8 and the Blue Devils slipped to No. 18. Cincinnati moved up to No. 1 and North Carolina moved up one spot to No. 5.
