Police issue description of attackers

Police have released the physical descriptions of the two men who robbed a male University student at gunpoint on Alderman Road Sunday night.

According to University Police Capt. Michael Coleman, both attackers have been described as black males between 5'9" and 6' tall, weighing between 165 and 170 pounds. One man wore a gray and black striped shirt and a black stocking cap, and the other wore a white long-sleeved shirt.

The robbery took place at about 8:30 p.m. outside Courtenay dormitory. A student was robbed of his wallet and possibly some jewelry. Although he was threatened with a handgun, the student was not hurt, police said. So far, no arrests have been made and no warrants have been issued. Coleman would not speculate about whether there a link exists between this incident and a series of armed robberies in the area in the past few weeks.

Dean of Students Penny Rue said anxiety about safety within the student body has increased over the last few weeks.

Much of this concern is legitimate, Rue said.

"This is the first armed robbery on Grounds than anyone can remember in a long time," she said.
