Student Affairs assistant search narrows to four

The University has narrowed its search for a new assistant to the vice president for student affairs to four candidates.

The vacancy was created when H. Sam Miller left the post in August to take over as vice chancellor for student affairs at the University of Connecticut. Shortly after his departure, University officials began looking for a replacement.

Assistants to the vice president for student affairs help oversee the Student Council appropriations process and work with the Student Activities Committee.

The Office of the Vice President for Student Affairs narrowed its original pool of nearly 60 applicants down to four finalists, said William W. Harmon, vice president for student affairs.

Two of these finalists now are University employees while two are external candidates. Harmon, who declined to release the finalists' names, said the candidates will undergo an interview process before a final selection is made.

"We'd like to be able to make an offer at least before we close for the holidays," he said. "The intention is for the person to start in the latter part of January or as early in the spring as possible."

Students, faculty and staff members are all involved in choosing a final candidate, because the job requirements span technological and student affairs issues, said Patricia Lampkin, associate vice president for student affairs.

Several people not associated with the University applied for the position, Lampkin said.

Potential applicants learned of the open position largely through online resources, Harmon said.

"We did something different this time, we used the computer," he said. "We went through a number of organizations with list servers as well as submitting advertisements in the Chronicle for Higher Education."

Advertisements also were placed in the Richmond Times-Dispatch, the Raleigh News and Observer, The Daily Progress as well as in University publications, Lampkin said.
