Terps best Deacons in field hockey finale

In Sunday's ACC Championship Field Hockey game, No. 1 Maryland captured the win over fifth-ranked Wake Forest. The game went into two overtime periods before the Terps' junior All-American Carla Tagliente scored the game-winning goal to give Maryland a 2-1 win over the Demon Deacons in Kentner Stadium in Winston-Salem, N.C.

Tagliente's unassisted goal came with 13:09 remaining in the second overtime period, giving Maryland its second consecutive Conference crown.

Although the Cavaliers fell to Maryland in the second round, two Cavs were named to the All-Tournament team. Virginia keeper Becky Worthington and Cav sweeper Julia Richardson were awarded this honor following outstanding defensive efforts against Maryland and Duke.

Against Duke, Worthington recorded eight saves and made her seventh shutout on the season. Richardson had two defensive saves in the game.

Against Maryland, the Virginia defense held the nation's highest-scoring offense to two goals, their lowest output of the year.

Tar Heels take 11th straight ACC title

North Carolina captured their 11th consecutive ACC Women's Soccer Championship Sunday afternoon. The win was also the No. 3 Tar Heels' 12th ACC Championship in the last 13 years and it gives them their 13th win in a row this season. With the victory, North Carolina has an automatic bid to the 1999 NCAA Tournament.

In the Championship game, North Carolina defeated No. 15 Wake Forest, 3-0. Three Tar Heels scored goals to help secure the win.

North Carolina also recorded its sixth straight shutout win with the victory.

Women's swimming and diving takes fifth at SMU Classic

The No. 11 Virginia women's swimming and diving team finished in fifth place at the SMU Women's Swimming and Diving Classic Saturday night.

First-year Mirjana Bosevska won the 500 freestyle and the 200 individual medley to help pace the Cavaliers. She was the highest point-scoring swimmer during the two-day meet.

First-year Cara Lane also won an event for the Cavs as she captured the 200 butterfly with a time of 1:59.42. She set a meet record in winning the consolation finals of the 500 freestyle.

Fourth-year Megan Iffland was the other top individual finisher for the Cavaliers, taking third place in the 200 backstroke.

Guthridge says Ford could return this week

North Carolina assistant coach Phil Ford returned home from an undisclosed alcohol treatment program Sunday and could return to work this week, Coach Bill Guthridge told The Associated Press.

Ford has been on medical leave since the end of September after being arrested for driving under the influence in Durham.
