Clemons searches for new director

After 18 years of service, James Self has decided to leave his position as director of Clemons Library to start a new career with the University's Library Management Information Service.

"It's the longest-running job I've ever had and the best job I've ever had, but it's time for me to do something else and for someone else to have the pleasure of directing Clemons," Self said.

Self's new position with the MIS will involve the collection of data that is used to make better informed management decisions, Wittenborg said. It is a position that he has been filling part time for the past three years.

As Self begins his new full-time job, the University Library is trying to fill the vacancy.

"There's a search committee made up of several people around the library," Associate Librarian Diane Walker said. "They've been chosen based on being responsible and responsive to committee appointments."

Walker also said she hopes students will become involved in the interview process. The Library Advisory Committee, which is composed of students, already has been invited to attend, but Walker is urging more students to participate.

"We really hope that students will be available to meet the candidates," she said.

The committee will be reviewing applications beginning Feb. 25.

"They will continue to review applications until someone has been found," Walker said.

A job description for the new director has been published in several library and higher education journals such as the Chronicle for Higher Education and the American Library Association. It also has been posted on e-mail list servers to which librarians from across the nation are able to subscribe. The job description indicates that an applicant must have such qualifications as a master's degree in library science or a related field, management experience and an understanding of current issues.

Self said he hopes the Library will hire "someone who is lively and dynamic and inventive"
