The No. 20 Virginia men's tennis team remained undefeated in the spring season, routing Michigan State, 6-1, Sunday at the Boar's Head Sports Club.
The Cavaliers (4-0) won five of six singles matches and swept the three doubles competitions. Virginia's Brian Vahaly, the No. 4 singles player in the nation, and fellow junior Huntley Montgomery defeated their singles opponents in straight sets. Vahaly and Montgomery, the No. 24 doubles team, downed the top Spartan duo, 8-4.
Senior John Winter, the third-ranked Cav singles player, lost to Michigan State's Robert Topalo, but Cavalier juniors Tommy Croker, Brian Hunter and Robert Abendroth won their matches. Croker and Winter also won the No. 2 doubles match 8-3, while Hunter and Abendroth teamed up to win 8-4 at No. 3.
Virginia faces Liberty and UNC-Greensboro Saturday and Ohio State Sunday in the first matches for the Cavaliers this season at Sheridan Snyder Tennis Center.
Tennis falls to Rams
The Virginia women's tennis team suffered its first loss of the spring season - a 6-3 defeat at the hands of Virginia Commonwealth Sunday in Richmond, snapping a four-match Cavalier win streak.
Each team won three singles matches, but the Rams (4-2) handed the Cavs their second loss of the year by sweeping the three doubles matches.
VCU's Martina Nedelkova and Andrea Ondrisova, the nation's No. 22 doubles pair, began the doubles sweep by defeating Cavalier juniors Leslie Cook and Christie Schweer, 8-3.
Freshmen Henriette Williams and Jennifer Tuchband and junior Kelly Weaver fared well in singles competition for Virginia, as each won in straight sets.
Up next for Virginia is a match against Harvard Saturday in Chapel Hill.
Women gear up for Tourney
The Virginia women's basketball team received the top seed in the Conference tournament after posting a 13-3 ACC record through the regular season. The Cavaliers' first opponent will be ninth-seeded Wake Forest. The Cavaliers and Deacons face off on Friday, the opening day of this year's tournament, which runs through next Monday in Greensboro, N.C.
Also Friday, seventh seed Maryland will battle eighth seed Florida State for the right to play Saturday against Duke, the second seed.
Other first round match-ups are fourth-seeded Clemson against fifth-seeded North Carolina and third seed N.C. State against sixth-seeded Georgia Tech.
Tigers' Porter ruled ineligible
Auburn basketball star Chris Porter admitted to university officials that he took money from a sports agent, Tigers Coach Cliff Ellis told the Associated Press yesterday.
Two anonymous sources told the AP that the preseason All-American accepted less than $2,000 in order to save his mother from being evicted from her home. Porter said he did not know that the man he took the money from was an agent, Alabama's Huntsville Times reported yesterday.
