Weekend plans
For any 'Hoos who might not spend Sunday recovering from a wild weekend, the Office of Orientation and New Student Programs is sponsoring a free trip to Monticello.
"We talk a lot about Thomas Jefferson here," Asst. Director of Orientation Monica Nixon said. "We learn about his role in the University of Virginia, but he did a lot of other things too."
The tour will highlight Jefferson's life, including his term as president.
Students also will learn about the history of Monticello, Nixon said.
She said the Office of Orientation is targeting new students for the trip, but anyone is invited to attend.
First-year resident staff members received fliers advertising the tour, and many first-year residence halls are using the trip as a hall event, she added.
While reservations are not mandatory, they are recommended.
Students must bring student identification cards to load buses, which will depart from the Chemistry Auditorium at 1, 2 and 3 p.m.
So far 150 students have signed up, Nixon said.
The Office might sponsor a second trip to Monticello in the future if a large number of students show interest in Sunday's tour.
