Virginia tennis player Brian Vahaly advanced to the quarterfinals of the 2000 Rolex National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships before losing Friday at Brookhaven Country Club in Texas. In the doubles portion of the tournament, the Cavalier duo of John Winter and Tommy Croker also was eliminated Friday in the semifinals of the consolation bracket.
Seeded third, Vahaly opened the tournament with a win over No. 24 Tyler Cleveland of Iowa in the first round Thursday. After beating No. 11 Shoun Madden of Texas A&M in the Round of 16 Friday morning, Vahaly lost that afternoon to Stanford's sixth-seeded Alex Kim 6-3, 5-7, 6-2.
The ninth-ranked pair of Winter and Croker lost 6-3, 6-4 in the consolation semifinals to No. 11 Leif Meineke and Wesley Moodie of Boise State. Winter and Croker dropped out of the main draw Thursday night after losing in the first round to top-seeded Geoff Abrams and Alex Kim of Stanford, 6-3, 7-5.
Winter and Croker moved into the semifinals of the consolation bracket with an injury walkover victory in the first consolation round over the second-seeded Auburn duo of Steve Huss and Tiago Ruffoni.
The No. 21 men's tennis team returns to Charlottesville Friday to take on Columbia at 6:30 p.m. at the Boar's Head Sports Club.
Conference clashes
In ACC men's hoops action this weekend, North Carolina (14-9, 5-4 ACC) won at Clemson (8-14, 2-7) 73-60 yesterday. Senior point guard Ed Cota led the Tar Heels with 17 points, while Conference-leading scorer Will Solomon poured in a game high 26 points for the Tigers, including six three-pointers.
Florida State (9-11, 4-5) prevailed at home over Wake Forest (12-10, 2-6) 66-61 Saturday. In Atlanta the same day, Georgia Tech (10-11, 2-6) beat Florida A&M 89-57.
Tobacco Road
The Virginia women's basketball team takes on North Carolina tonight in a crucial ACC battle in Chapel Hill. The Cavs (17-5, 9-1 ACC) have a nine-game Conference win streak on the line against a Tar Heel team (11-10, 9-7) that has won five of their last six meetings. Virginia upset UNC in their most recent matchup, coming away with an 87-68 win Jan. 6.
