Cavalier men look to swim to NCAA gold

The Virginia men's swimming and diving team will be well represented at this weekend's NCAA Championships in Minneapolis. Eight swimmers - seniors Doak Finch and Austin Ramirez, juniors Jamie Grimes and Troy Johnson, sophomores Ed Moses and Chris Mousetis and freshmen Dan DeMarco and Evan Taylor - will compete for the Cavaliers.

Coming off a program-best 14th-place finish at the 1999 NCAA Championships, the No. 7 Cavs now hold the highest national ranking in Virginia history. They will be represented in 16 of the 18 swimming events in the competition, which run today through Saturday.

Today at 1 p.m., ESPN2 will replay Saturday's NCAA wrestling finals, featuring Virginia 125-pounder Steve Garland.

Garland, a fifth-year senior seeded eighth, made a historic run to the finals. He toppled Jody Strittmatter, the No. 1 seed from national dynasty Iowa, before falling to second-seeded Jeremy Hunter of Penn State in the finals.

Garland, who beat Strittmatter and T.J. Hill of California-Fullerton in a pair of sudden-death matches, is the first Virginia wrestler since 1957 to place that high at the NCAAs.
