Cavalier men to travel to Europe

Although the men's basketball team's season only recently ended, preparation for next year has already begun. The team recently scheduled a trip to Germany, Belgium and France to compete against various club and professional teams from Europe on an 11-day journey beginning August 16. In a press release, coach Pete Gillen said this trip would be extremely beneficial by allowing the team to experiment with different combinations. All returning Virginia players are eligible. Incoming recruits are not.

Women's tournament shake-up

Unlike its male counterpart, the women's NCAA Tournament saw all four No. 1 seeds advancing into the Elite Eight. However, No. 2 seeds Penn State and Rutgers broke the trend Monday by knocking off top seeds Louisiana Tech and Georgia.

Penn State will next face Connecticut, while Rutgers battles perennial powerhouse Tennessee. The Lady Vols' appearance will be Pat Summitt's 12th Final Four, tying her with John Wooden for the most in college basketball.

Virginia among the best

Virginia occupied the 20th overall spot in the Sears Directors' Cup rankings released this past week by the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics. Based on national finishes in 20 different sports, the Sears Cup goes to the top overall athletic program in the country.
