Virginia 125-pounder Steve Garland reached the finals of the NCAA wrestling championships but lost 7-3 to second-seed Jeremy Hunter of Penn State Saturday in St. Louis.
Seeded eighth entering the weekend, Garland won two sudden death matches to advance to the finals. The fifth-year senior defeated top-seeded Jody Strittmatter of Iowa in the quarterfinals, 9-7, with a takedown 43 seconds into overtime. In the semifinals, Garland defeated T.J. Hill of California-Fullerton 6-5.
Garland's performance earned him All-American honors. His second-place finish was the Cavs' highest at the NCAAs since 1957, when Henry Jordan was the runner-up in the heavyweight division.
Cavalier sophomore Ryan McGrath won three matches in the wrestle-back competition before succumbing, 7-4, to Shawn Scannell of Rider. Virginia's P.J. Bory and John Pozniak also competed in the championships.

The No. 2 Virginia men's lacrosse team (3-1) won 19-5 at Stony Brook Saturday. Jay Jalbert tallied four goals and Drew McKnight added three goals and three assists in the Cav romp.
