LaRue named ACC Rookie of Year

As the Virginia women's basketball team awaits an NCAA Tournament seed, freshman forward Schuye LaRue can distract herself with her new ACC Rookie of the Year award.

LaRue, who earned All-ACC and All-Tournament second team honors this week, is the first Cavalier to be named the Conference's top freshman since Tora Suber in 1994.

The D.C. native led the ACC in field goal percentage and doubles-doubles and tied for the league lead in blocked shots. She led Conference rookies in scoring with 14.6 points per game and tied with N.C. State's Kaayla Chones for the freshman lead in rebounding with 7.9 boards per game.

  • Zagging to victory

Virginia senior pitcher Stacey Zagol was named ACC softball pitcher of the week after winning two games in last week's Cavalier Classic.

Zagol tossed a pair of complete game two-hitters, helping the Cavs compile a 4-0 record to win the five-team tournament. She held the opposition to only one run and struck out 15 batters in the two wins.

    Dunleavy returns, Battier stays

Duke freshman swingman Mike Dunleavy was cleared yesterday for limited playing time after missing four games during a bout with mononucleosis and will return to the team in time for the ACC Tournament.

The No. 3 Blue Devils got some other good news Tuesday, as junior forward Shane Battier announced he plans to hold off the NBA for another year and return to Durham for his senior season.

Battier said he made the announcement because he did not want speculation about his future to distract the Devils from their postseason run.

    Wooden it be nice

Twenty-two players - including two ACC stars and a former Cavalier - were named finalists for the John R. Wooden Award, given to college basketball's player of the year.

Battier and Duke teammate Chris Carrawell are on the ballot, as is former Virginia forward Courtney Alexander, who now leads the country in scoring at Fresno State.
