Reflecting on race

"Can I call you 'nigga" a flyer asks. Brothers United Celebrating Knowledge and Success hope the shock-value of their flyers will encourage anyone enraged or intrigued by racial commentary to attend Reflection on Complexion, an open forum for race discussions today at 8 p.m. in Old Cabell Hall.

The event marks the culmination of B.U.C.K.S. week, which serves as the organization's outreach week. The organization, formed at the University in 1997 by seven black males, provides mentoring for children in the community.

A 16-minute video will open tonight's discussion, followed by Race Line, B.U.C.K.'s version of the popular radio call-in show "Love Line."

"We want anyone who wants to talk to have an opportunity," said Ryan Coleman-Ferebee, fourth-year College student and university relations chair. "We don't want to be preachy. We just want people to come with open minds to help them tolerate what others have to say."

Coleman-Ferebee stresses audience diversity as key to the evening's success.

"It's not just black and white, but Asian and Indian and Hispanic and everyone else," he said.

Destination: Spring Gala

The First Year Council will hold a formal evening under the stars tomorrow in Newcomb Hall plaza. Proceeds from the Spring Gala will benefit Destination Toyland, the Council's original charity started in fall.

A first-year class survey served as the impetus for Destination Toyland. Students expressed interest in helping children and hospitals in the area, and the council decided to combine the two ideas by donating toys and spending time with children at the Children's Medical Center.

"As a class, we have adopted the hospital's toy room," said Sarah Jobe, first-year College student and service committee chair.
