Softball takes pair from UMBC

After battling through the rain and cold Tuesday against Harvard, the Virginia softball team was rewarded with sunshine yesterday and responded with two wins in a doubleheader with the University of Maryland-Baltimore County at The Park.

The Cavaliers (15-25) won the first game 1-0 behind solid defense and a complete game two-hit shutout from righthander Chrissy Quinn (4-9). After her stellar six-strikeout performance against the Retrievers (12-15), the senior captain credited her defense.

"We played really strong defensively and then came up with two big hits to score that one run," Quinn said. "It would have been nice to get a couple more runs, but the defense pulled through."

The winning run came in the bottom of the third inning, as freshman shortstop Johanna Kaiser led off with a single and scored on a triple by junior right fielder Meaghan Young.

In the second game, the Cavs scored individual runs in four different innings to emerge with a 4-3 victory.

"It wasn't pretty, but we got the job done," Virginia coach Cheryl Sprangel said.

Tied at three in the sixth, Virginia rallied for the game-winning run. Young led off with a single and came around on a base hit by freshman Ruby Rojas. Senior pitcher Stacey Zagol (8-8), who entered in relief of starter Kristen Dennis in the top of the sixth, pitched two hitless innings to earn the win.

Dennis got the Cavaliers on the board in the first with a sacrifice fly to centerfield. An inning later, left fielder Kelly McCabe singled and scored on Young's second RBI triple of the day. Dennis added one more run in the third with a solo home run to left-center for a 3-0 Cav lead.

On the mound, Dennis pitched four shutout innings before running into trouble in the top of the fifth. She gave up a single and then walked the next two batters. UMBC right fielder Lisa Boone then cleared the bases with a three-run triple to knot the score at three.
