Honor listens to student suggestions

Four Honor System Review Commission members met with about 20 students last night in an open forum in Minor Hall to discuss concerns about the system.

Commission members said this feedback will be important as they head into the most intensive phase of their evaluation of the Committee's procedures.

Committee Chairman Thomas Hall, Terra Weirich, former Committee vice chairwoman for trials, Amy Campbell, Graduate School of Arts and Sciences representative, and Neil Bynum, interim assistant dean of the Luther P. Jackson Cultural Center were the Commission members on hand for last night's forum.

Alexander "Sandy" G. Gilliam, moderator and Board of Visitors secretary, asked students to speak frankly about the honor system and to explain why they might be reluctant to initiate honor cases.

Commission representatives also heard concerns about whether the Committee makes enough effort to educate the student body.

The purpose of last night's forum was to let Commission members "hear what the current generation of the student body has to say about honor," Hall said. "We especially wanted to hear the concerns of people who feel disenfranchised by the system."

He said Commission members will take input from the forum back to the full Commission at its next meeting May 13.

The Commission is charged with studying every procedural aspect of the honor system and making specific recommendations for improving it.

"The overarching look [the Commission] is taking will be very helpful in avoiding the piecemeal changes that occur in regular Committee meetings," said Scott Sottile, Committee vice chairman for services.

The Commission will meet six more times over the summer and early next semester before presenting its findings to the Committee Sept. 17.

Hall said the Commission has decided to break its evaluation of the honor system into four subcommittee categories.

One subcommittee will look into the Committee's investigation procedures, another will evaluate its case adjudication process, another will appraise the role of support officers and Committee members and the last subcommittee will look into Committee public relations concerns.

When the Commission presents its findings to the Committee, "you can bet it will spark some serious debate," Hall said.
